I haven't been playing warhammer too long.. but decided to pick up vampire counts mainly because the status of them.
Anyways, myself and two others are going to have a bracket tourney.. ofcorse i will be playing as vampire counts. The vet of the group will be playing as high elf, and will no doubt be using Tesiclis.. not sure how to spell. Anyways, Strigoi would be perfect army so he can't take off any weps or ar, because i won't have any.. but would be a problem because he uses the spell to become etheral in which i wouldn't be able to hit him...
The other will be playing as Chaos, and would no doubt be using Archon... Pretty much the only person i've used to take out Archon has been Vlad, where he actually killed himself and me at the end of the game..
Well with that said, it's obvious i have a little problem... i could always use Von Carstiens, which i would have Vlad, and pretty much the rest necros to be able to stand up to high elves... even if just a little... and vlad would be able to take on Archon... Anyways.. it's obvious i need some advice here, if anyone has any advice at all, i would appreciate it...
I think Vlad requires opponents permission, unlike the other characters mentioned, so it may not be a good idea to take him. Mannfred on the other hand might work well, if everyone else is taking characters then why not. Maybe even go for Necrarch and take Zacharias, those dispel scrolls every turn will be helpful but he is a huge points sink. What size battle are you having anyway?
Another thing you could think of is the Sylvanian list, there is less magic in it but you get all those grave markers. Combine that with a few bound items and summon wolves on a couple of vampires and you are set. Also these vampires would only require great weapons so Teclis and his Vaul's unmaking won't do a lot. The Sylvanian list has worked very well for me before.
Don't play with special characters. Don't you see what happens then? The games are only about wether you can kill the overpowered superlord or not.
Try to convince them that you should play this tournament without special characters.
Indeed, I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but if you've only just started I'd wait a bit before doing tournament stuff.
It's too easy for uber-characters to dominate the game in this situation, and like WickedRock I'd recommend doing normal armies for a bit.
However, beyond that, there's plenty of threads around with more advice about specific units, etc.
Mordheim: Middenheimers & Night Goblins
Well yeah, I agree that special characters, especially if they are on both sides, dominate the battle and take focus away from the armies. But, if all your opponents are taking them and it seems they will certainly go with them then the best way to combat them is to take your own. If you can convince your opponents not to take them then do that instead, otherwise they can be very hard to take down. Especially characters like Teclis and Archaon.
I know they are definatly taking the special chars, and i've went again each of them before.. as 2 on 2 and ffa.. the main issue here is having a bracket tourney.. i'd have to set my army up to take out high elves and chaos... I do agree, i would rather not use special chars, i think it would be better without them, actually setting up your guys... I'm pretty sure they won't change their mind, and i have used vlad before... Vlad's pretty much the only one that will take out archaon and tecilis can take away vlads sword, and become etheral, so i wouldn't be able to hurt him... I already know their strategy, just that it's kind of cheap, especialy using the same army to take them both out... the same thing is true for them though.. i will definatly see if they will play without special chars, but aside from that.. I was thinking of taking vlad, and the rest necros having just a castien army... Thanks for the advice though guys, if u have any more, please feel free..
Sorry, also this is a 3000 pt army...
