Welcome to Librarium Online!
It's my first post in here. I live in Poland (sorry for my English :-) ) and play VC. For a welcoming I would like to share a bit of my toughts with You.
I wanted to equip my Blood Dragon vampire with the Cursed Shield of Mousillon. Of course, it is a nice item since it takes away one enemy's attack. But I was wondering is it a good idea when you're fighting against Bretonnian Knights and characters, because they get 'hatred' against your character. Thus I decided to do some maths. :-) I've solved simple equation, witten simple program and made a plot. Finally I wrote in LaTeX a short paragraph about it and here you are - a brand new PostScript file. You can download it (.ps and .pdf version) from:
The plot shows when using CS helps you to defeat your enemy. Since 'hatred' works only in the first round of close combat, whole my study apply to only this situation. Of course, in the following rounds only your character gains profit. Curve in my graph is the critical curve, that is it is a curve on which none of the fighters gets profit.
Keep in mind that even if you are in the profitable region on the graph, it doesn't mean that your character will cut the enemy into pieces with one blow. Your advantage could be only slight (but still on your side :-) ).
Feel free to ask any questions. Especialy, if you didn't understand what I've just said. ;-) And any comment would be nice. :-)
i think im too dumb to understand your chart, but what i did hear you say is that it is advantageous. thus i agree that it is good, as something that complicated must be right.
would you like a complementary broadsword with your chainmail bikini?
Yes, the chart sounds terribly complicated but its conclusion is clear: the shield's a plus if you make it past the first round of combat. And like Brother Angvar says, "Something that complicated must be right."Originally posted by Brother Angvar@Dec 24 2004, 19:14

I loved your message BA, made me chuckle.
OK, I see it's a bit incomprehensible. I'll try to explain everything step by step.
We know that CS takes away one enemy's attack. And it's good for our character. However, while fighting against Bretonnian Knights and characters, they will get a re-roll of failed 'to hit' rolls (since they 'hate' our character) in the the first round of close combat. And this re-roll is not good for us, because the enemy gets another chance to hit our character.
Suppose we want to find out when using of CS and not using of it will affect close combat the same (of course, in the first round only). We can write an equation (we equate chances of wounding our character not equiped with and equiped with CS):
A * H * W * S = (A-1) * [H + (1-H)*H] * W * S ;
where: A - number of enemy's attacks,
H - enemy's 'to hit' probability,
W - enemy's 'to wound' probability,
S - probability of failing our character's saves of any kind.
W and S reduces and after elementary transformations we receive number of enemy's attacks (A) as a function of enemy's 'to hit' probability (H):
A = (H-2)/(H-1) .
This is an equation for our 'critical line'. On the graph, below this 'critical line' is a region where using of CS by our character is profitable for him. In this region recucing enemy's attacks by one and giving the enemy a re-roll of 'to hit' roll is worse for him than doing nothing (that is not usig CS by our character). In the region above the 'critical line' the enemy has bigger chances of wounding our character when we use CS than when we don't use it.
For example, if the enemy hits our character on 3+ and has 3 attacks, then using of CS by our character is profitable for us, because it effectively reduces the enemy chances to wound our character. But if the enemy hits on 3+ and has 5 attacks, then using of CS will help the enemy to wound our character.
I hope this helps a bit. :-)
but still there is much better things to take then negating 1 enemy attack.
it might be usefull against heroes/lord maybe some special attacks but on the regualr basis you don't need it
