i am participating in a builder tournament for fantasy currently, and though i could just avoid playing them i feel kind of bad about it. is there any real way developed right now to beat them? or will we have to wait for the kingdoms to get a few more months under it's size 75 belt.
would you like a complementary broadsword with your chainmail bikini?

Ogres have some pretty glaring weaknesses, although they are still pretty interesting.
Manueverability: Ogre units have HUGE frontages. Most people will run about 4 wide, I've even heard of people with 5-6 frontages, which is just massive. Wheeling that way will eat up a mass of movement. With the exception of the cats, the best manueverability is 7 with the Yetis, and then the rest of the army is pretty much 6.
Ranks: Yeah, Ogres won't have ranks. Maybe one unit with 1. So with no ranks, that's +3 combat resolution against the ogres (just don't let the knoblars flank you, although it isn't that bad. They still have to make a fear check to charge, and the +4 combat rez they get can be relatively easily taken away. Just direct as many attacks as possible (even characters if possible) against noblars, for much easier combat res for yourself, and taking away from his ranks).
Numbers: You will have a lot more
Magic: At 2000 points, he will maybe have 6 casting dice, 4 dispel, but most likely 4 casting, 3 dispel.
Lack of shooting: He will have maybe a scraplauncher, and maybe 4-6 leadbelchers total.
Really I don't think Ogres are a huge deal. You won't cause him to autobreak ever (since he is also a fear causer), but in the end, all he really has is his attacks, which you can just make more zombies/skeletons. If he wins, it will be major attrition.
I personaly dont play vampire counts, but i do fight ogres alot. The eaisest way to win against them is combat resolution. Rank up and try and tie them down with units so you can flank charge. Also if you have any spells or units who poison, that will put fear into all the iron guys and maneaters with heavy armor.
Ogres scare me simply because i dont know them yet.
but what i can say from my 2 games against them is.
1. use dire wolfs, get into his flanks.
2.Vampire count-blood dragon, (im a blood dragon player) use him for challanges, with heart pirceing.
3.Ethreal creatures, they can really hurt ogres, forceing him to concentrate those magic weapon useres to go after them, seting you count up to go hunting
4.NECROMANCER!!!!!!!!!!! DISPEL SCROLLS!!!! Gut magic is Very nasty.
5.Invocation, use it for shhhhneekey flank charges
hope that helps

sorry this post is a bit old,
but in my experrience i games ive watched ( and a few i have played ) is that vampire counts alwasy beat ogres . due to characters.
obiously thats how vampire counts beat all their opps but with few numbers . those blood dragons/stringoi will be slash throuhg them .
Yeah, but Ogres (not even characters) will murder our rank and file, not to mention they wouldn't have too much trouble killing our characters just by allocating attacks.Originally Posted by d w a r f
I have already played 3 games against Ogre Kingdoms. One way to defeat them is flankig with Spirit Hosts or Black Knights (magical support). Ogres have even lower average WS than then VC troops. I used that tactics as Necrarch and won with 500 points.
The other two games I played Strigoi and charging with both Count and Thrall inflicts 7 wounds on any unit (5 if heavy cavalry) so both games ended with a masacre. Ogres don't have many units so destroying a unit almost every turn is crucial. And don't bother the gnoblars - they are completely harmless and flee if you defeat an Ogre unit 6" away form them.
I've had one game against them and was beaten soundly. My zombies broke and ran down his hunter and two sabretusks. My ghouls munched on his leadbelchers, but his main unit of bulls with bruiser proved too much. His tooled-up bruiser killed my blood dragon thrall in the second round of a challenge. His bulls rolled incredibly well, inflicting 12 CR wounds, wiping out the remainder of the skeletons. I then hit that unit in the flank with the zombies, which had also run off a gnoblar unit, panicked the bull unit with hero but on the last turn of the game, they rallied, giving him the victory and avoiding the draw. It was a 1000 pt game, by the way. And the spirit host never before vanished so quickly, falling to the bruiser.
Do what I plan on always doing... use tons of wolves. Flank him and rear him, you'll be able to do it easily, and use zombies. After a little while the guy will get totally pissed off and you should totally ripp him apart in combat resolution. They may even break. And use things like fell bats to stall/take out artillery or even spirits to block them entirely. If anything they are just pushovers and the same tactics work against them as everyone else, summon allot and try and flank him and remove any artillery.
And they have very little over strength 7, so if you take a coach it should be safe.
