Mercenary Wizard Lords, Can They Be Used?

hey, my friend plays with a lvl 4 mercenary wizard lord in his army of VC.
can he do this?
if he cant can someone find some proof so that i can stop him doing it! lol.

I am 99.99999% sure that the DoW heroes are for DoW ONLY lists. However, I can't point to anything and show you. Sorry.

On page 57 (really page 4), it says, under the section "Fielding 'Dogs of War' in other Warhammer armies" that they can field units, but no where does it say lords or heroes, or characters. Also, while it doesn't constitute 100% proof, I tried taking heroes/lords from DoW for VC, and there was no way to do it on Army Builder.

The All-knowing Kiwi is right. See page 61 of Annual 2004. It reads, "Dogs of War special characters can be fielded only by Dogs of War armies." It is the Regiments of Renown that can be used in regular army lists, and then sometimes with restrictions.

Also, only those DoW units listed as "For Hire" can be used in regular armies, and mercenary wizards are not listed as such. Even these for hire come with restrictions depending upon your army, and still a few are Regiments of Renown only available to a DoW army.

A merc wizard isn't a special character, just a character. But it does say only units can be hired, a character is not a unit. So only normal DoW units or RoR mercs can be hired.

They can take the dark emissarry and seer or something like that, can't remember the names, from the Albion campaign. They are only hero and rare as lvl4 wizards, if that is what he is taking it is fine unless he is using the Sylvanian list.

Truthsayer, but the VC can only take a Dark Emissary (Unless you are playing a Dark Shadows campaign, in which case you can have either, but only if your opponent has the opposite), and it does take up a Rare and Hero slot (except in the Dark Shadows again). He also has his own specific magic line, he can be found in the 2001 Dark Shadows campaign book, and probably a few other places.

Again, I'm not big on DoW, ESPECIALLY getting a level 4 magic user for a hero slot (big deal losing the rare).

Yeah it is powerful getting a lvl4 wizard for a hero choice, but he costs a lot of points and cannot have any items. Plus he can't cast necromancy. Overall though, I still wouldn't use one because it is DoW and adds a lot of power to the list.

TK can take them as well, this makes them have a magic phase as well as their incantations. A level 4 wizard easily replaces one of the other heroes and makes the TK magic that much harder to stop.

265 points for a level 4 human statline wizard (with 1 less T), who has a 5+ Ward save and +1 to cast? That's a steal. A level 4 Wizard Lord for Empire with a White Cloak (5+ Ward), and a Grey Wand (+1 to cast) is 290. So the Dark Emissary is 25 points less for having 1 less toughness, and doesn't take up a Lord spot. I really have to say I think this is one of the more powerful DoWs, and more unbalanced.
