Alright, so figuring you're playing an army with 2 necromancers in it (always nice to do, and indeed a comman setup), how many extra boxes of skeletons and zombies should one buy?
I suppose it depends on whether you are intending on raising zombies as speed bumps or either to bolster or make new units, and how much magic you want to put into summoning as opposed to other stuff. I would start with a box of each then see how that suits your playing style, if you are finding you want more than that and need to sub models half way through a battle then buy more. That should probably be enough in most games because remember your models on the field at the start die and can be used later on.
I use one box to make about 20 solid figures, and 10-20 more in mid raising, so, depends on how much you do this. If you're just using each box for 20, quire a few.
Well, I actually don't have my army together (still working with my meager earnings to eat and be able to get a unit a month or so) but I don't plan on bringing Zombies with me (I play Lahmia, they're more Skeletons than Zombies), but instead probubly a few units of skeletons and quite a few of Dire Wolves. Then summoning zombies as speed bumps and Skeletons to refill my ranks.
Well, my advice would be to have zombies for summoning. They're much more reliable than skeletons as you get the +1, +2, or +3. And when they're killed off, your opponent gets fewer victory points for them. I can usually get by with 20 zombies that get summoned, killed, and summoned again, but I'm assembling a second box of them now because I do need them sometimes. And I would like to try fielding a large unit of zombies from the beginning, so this lets me do that, too.
Normally I rarely need skeletons from the second box (with Necrarchs I start with 14 10-point skelies, the same for Strigoi), for I summon them only to keep the initial unit about 20 models.
The zombies are different and depend on the bloodline. As I field no zombie unit with Necrarchs,
two boxes are about enough. My Strigoi army starts with 2 19-model units intending to summon
a third one and constantly add models to those units so there at least 3 boxes are needed.
Anyway zombies are fun to paint (every one in my army is done separately at a rate 2 for a week) and each model gives a lot of possibilities to invest imagination and creativity so they a worth their \
So IMO for a 2000 pts game a VC player needs 1-2 skeleton boxes and 3 zobmie ones.
I have 60 summoning zombys in total (im building 20 more) and have 20 summoning skelys (i don't often summon these. I play sylvanians but as i play normal VC when i started i replaced all my zombys and skelly, so i know use these spare as summoning units (even though i am curently building some sylvanian levy to replace them).
This guy i know has 170 zombys in total, but its up to each person. Alternativly i've bought the maximum number of dire wolves i can summon with summon wolves (and Drakenhof banner) in one game (3 summon wolves, wanted 4 but needed "aura of dark majesty" more, means a max of 18 wolves) so that i don't loose out on the poits i paid for summon wolves (and what a steal, i usually get twice as much wolves summoned than i paid in points!).
