Default Am I seeing things?

"Von Carsteins and Blood Dragons may choose either a Great Weapon (+6 pts), an additional hand weapon (+6 pts), or a lance (+6 pts)."

Now, this would imply that Vampires could take a Lance while on foot (It has been argued that Lances still confer their bonus if a lancer's mount is shot and he has to continue on foot, but it isn't much of a problem, as most players can reach an agreement), so am I seeing things or not? Has the "if mounted" paragraph been added later or what?

Its true it doesn't mention it in the army book, but i think there is mention somewhere in the main rulebook that lances are for mounted models. I'm not sure if you can use a lance if your mount dies, but I don't think you can take them when you aren't mounted still.

I think it's mincing words to take a lance while on foot. And the strength bonus comes from the mount's strength when galloping/charging, not from the lance itself. Plus, it's too damned comical to imagine a vampire racing around the battlefield on foot, wagging an eight-foot lance about.

The rulebook says the following thing about a lance:

All Cavalry, monster riders and chariot riders armed with long lances can employ this deadly weapon with devastating effect.

So I think someone on foot can't use the lance.

It isn't in the actual weapon effect description, now is it?

Ok, don't bring such an obvious rules lawyer tactic in here. It specifically says in the description of the lance that "All cavalry, monster riders and chariot riders armed with long lancers can employ this deadly weapon with devestating effect".

You do not get the lance bonus when charging on foot. Even if you could argue a Von Carstien model w/ Wolf Form was modeled on a cavalry base, the rules in the FAQ specifically states cavalry that do not consist of a rider and a mount follow the rules for models on foot, as far as weapons go.

My definition of a rules lawyer is someone who uses the letter of the rules to bend rules against the intent of them. So, me being able to point something like that out just means I have too much free time on my hands.

Bah, I argue for the sake of doing it, not to make a Blood Dragon swinging a lance over his head while running at an enemy

Well, the description of the Vampire book did say that they are some of the mightyest creatures in the warhammer world, so seeing a Vampire with a lance on foot, compared to a Bretonian armed with one on a horse, seems imaginable to me. But, the Rules do say you have to be on a mount.
