I know my fellow Vampire lords that a undead battle "might" be boring, and in no way am I ever going to give up my fangs! But really what do you think of the Tomb kings and how do their art of magic and battle minions compare to ours? Are they a worthy foe or just kids in the home-dizzel of the undead? Also I know that you felloe vamps may not be able to tell me for maybe none of you play TK but I am just curious and darn it is pretty cool in my mind seeing my friends TK and my VC going at it like pigs over a milk dud. Thanks in advance
I play Tomb Kings as well as Vampire Counts so I can answer you. The short answer is yes, they are just as competative IMO and simply have a different style of play.
They rely less on the killing characters, Tomb Kings and Princes are good but nowhere near as powerful as vampires. They rely a lot more on magic though, they cannot survive without it no matter what. They will never be able to create huge hordes as they can't have more models than they start with, they can heal any unit not just skeletons though. And with their magic they can become an extremely fast, manouvreable and deadly army. It is very relentless, no one (not even Khorne) can possibly hope to stop all of it. If there is a specific spell a TK general wants to work, theres no stopping it.
They have more units that actually do damage and rely pretty heavily on special choices to work for them, as well as the chariot units they get. There is no horde of zombies simply trying to outnumber an opponent, have a vampire kill a couple, then force them to flee. Things work well together and hit hard and fast, but they are still very fragile and need to be used well.
They have possibly the fastest thing in the game too, with the aid of magic a unit of carrion can charge a full 40" in one turn. That means bye bye artillery and lone mages had better watch out, its a nice tactic. Carrion aren't too soft either.
Another thing is they have really sweet models.
So in summary, TK have weaker characters but better units, weaker magic but a hell of a lot more of it and its extremely reliable, potentially faster, use long range stuff and can use it damn well with catapults reducing leadership and being able to fire twice a turn with magic or archers never suffering any shooting penalties. I would say TK are just as good as VC, they just need to be used differently from VC.
Another thing, the heirophant (guy who makes your army crumble) is a soft liche rather than a tough as nails Vampire, but he is not the general so when making tests you can still rely on generals leadership if within range. But TK can never march, even if close to the general.
Though the Tomb Kings are frail they are perhaps one of the best armies in the game, its just that most who play them do not have the patience nor the understanding to use them to thier full potential. And i agree with what strewart said, but i have to mention that they are an inflexible army at best, they rely on magic and only magic to win the day. And contradicting myself they have some pretty sweet ass units they can get into play. Thier archers are a tie with WE for the best in the game(Yes, Really!) and Ushbati are just badass, not to mention tomb scorpions, thier Tomb guards are a nerfed version of Wights but o maaaaaan, Bone Giants. I once saw a Bone Giant playing a moulder skaven army, he charged into a huge unit of clanrat slaves, killed them all thanks to unstoppable assault, ovveran into a unit of giant rats, and proceeded for a half hour to overun every unit he charged into and by the time that beast was done there was friggen an eighth of the guys army left.
