Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey guys , new to the forums, and I've been an on and off again warhammer gamer for a while now. I never really got my own army because the person in our click mostly responsible for us playing has roughly five armies he lets people use and a "war room" (actually a wood working shop) and he loves painting models for people etc... Anyways my friend in the army recently bought about 8k in pts value of ogre army so I guess hes comitted now and I might as well finally decide on one for myself. My hobbies in the past have been EQ and Magic: The Gathering so overall strategy in this department isn't TOO much of a stretch for me. The main problem we have is theres almost always more than two people around that want to play, and that ALWAYS messes the game up, espically more for me than others IMO. I lost several games because I'm TRYING to get my magic off and theres apparently 2 sets of dice pools to stop me (one being dwarves even) and despite that I still manage to pull off some impressive staying power. Well after playing consistently vs High elves, khemri, lizards, ogres, and dwarves, the only thing I really feel like I'm lacking in my armies is a nice tough hulk unit. Knights are really our closest contendor that I can safely use. Recently I started using the storms of chaos list and I gotta say I'm very impressed. It feels 100% more like a true vampire/undead army with the grave markers. I was disappointed to have zero shooting and zero scouts and it really bridges both of those gaps. I also like that with the restricted army list I can actually convince myself into using a vampire lord for the extra magic. Look at my 2k Sylvanian army (in the works) and let me know what you think.
Vampire Lord - Talon of death, earthbind, crown of the damned, black periapt
vampire thrall - battle standard bearer, cursed book
???(15/19) grave guard - champion
12 Dire Wolves - Scouts , champion
2x1 Black coach
2x1 bat swarm
Spirit Host ?
then theres possible room for spirit host of 2ish with change left over. The idea would be to fly around harass units with breath and magic until i build up enough grave marker units and my other units get in position. Strike with my wolves if the oppertunity presents itself, use batswarms and host and chariots to pin units with some umph and use my generals massive hits to try and break units in on the charge. He certainly has enough power to take out other generals , espically if I coordinate him next to my grave guard so they get a -2 total in close combat. I'm magic heavy so I can balance between markers and regular magic pretty well depending on what I need. I do have some questions for veterans out there. 1) The wraiths riding the chariots DO count as characters dont they? They are heros, so does that mean if the chariot is destroyed I get to place a wraith , and likewise if I charge a unit with command do I get to issue challenges ? I know the answer to the next question but I was hoping agaisnt hope I was wrong. If you attack with multiple units and somehow lose combat by say 2, do BOTH units take 2 CR wounds or does your side take 2? And I've read in mutliple places characters can join wolves but people always mention VC with wolf form, is that just so they can move completely as far as wolves ? And if I AM mounted on a horse and join them do I get the free reforms ?
No they do not, they cannot issue challenges and if the coach dies they die with it.The wraiths riding the chariots DO count as characters dont they? Both units, I'm pretty sure it states that in the army book in the section on crumbling and undead. If you attack with multiple units and somehow lose combat by say 2, do BOTH units take 2 CR wounds or does your side take 2?If you attach a normal vampire the whole unit will move slower, so yes it is to make them faster and a thrall with flayed hauberk, wolf form and great weapon is a good choice. And I've read in mutliple places characters can join wolves but people always mention VC with wolf form, is that just so they can move completely as far as wolves ?Not sure if you can do that, but if so then it wouldn't I don't think. Actually it may be worth thinking about, HE players say commanders don't get the abilities for joining reavers why would this case be any different? I mean with the thrall wolf form, why would he get it and not the horses? And if I AM mounted on a horse and join them do I get the free reforms ?
As to your list, I do not think it is all that good... A zombie dragon is a huuge point sink at 2k and generally not worth it at all IMO. I mean, the thing costs as much as a steam tank for crying out loud.
And you rely way too much on your magic, if an opponent has decent magic defence they are going to be able to stop you raising all these units you want. I do not think it is that magic heavy, you should take some levy or militia units to start with. As for harassing them, what if they happen to be fast as well and destroy you before you get the chance to raise enough to fight them? What if they are shooty and cut down you small numbers? The lord will definitely be a target since he is a large target and probably won't survive all that long.
Well, I did up using the army in a fight. Of course, we played with 4 armies total and just in case we do it differently than anybody else let me fill you in on how its done. Nothing really shocking but basically the 2 armies allied go at the same time. All phases run concurent and but in such things as the magic phase we dont pool dice but everybody gets their full amounts and capabilities. Anyways , though theres no real justifyable reason for why the armies we used would ever ally, it ended up being Khemri + Lizardmen vs Vamps + Dwarves.
The khemri and dwarves both used special characters (the khermi actually used some lich out of a WD piloting a bone giant) Basically it was a non slann Lizardmen army and a khemri construct army vs a sylvanian army and dwarves went light on war machines. I personally think we smoked them. Even though they were both backing up and shooting at the dwarves the entire time and My general almost got eaten by a bad charge. The Chariots did great at smashing bone giants, and a hero, pinning a scorpion for several rounds until it finnally got lucky on some rolls. We stopped a comet before it landed with 3 markers (which we cheated to see how big it was gonna be afterwards and it would've eaten up 70% of the forces) And by the way, the magic actually worked incredibly well considering my first spell of the day was a miscast and half the time I was using power dice to dispel comets. Even with two people with full dispel dice pools (thanks dorfs) Plenty of grave markers got off and I was able to heal my lord up and eventually his dragon (after 2 dispel scrolls mind you). One particular fight was pretty humiliating for the lizardman. He charged a flame cannon with Korxigar and broke it but decided to chase down the last dwarf but didnt even make it. So eventually I got in there with levy and reared him with my vampire (risky) but the book saved the day. Of course his general eventually made my BSB pay though my dragon was getting close to make him pay. In all we each had our moments ... of horrible horrible luck. Two times the stone thrower made direct hits and didnt wound the khemri general. One major factor as to why my general got into trouble is we didnt know if Talon of deaths hits at the end of the movement phase would count vs combat resolution or not so we compromised and said they wouldnt get to retaliate but wouldnt count either. I think I took out 2-3 from that plus I was dumb and challenged a lizard hero and he got 2 hits on my dragon in the challenge. But anyways we won so I'd say at least agaisnt some armies this list isnt that horrible.
