The rules about battle standard bearers are patched together, but wielding two hand weapons and a battle standard can tax even the most capable Von Carstein thrall. And if he has wolf form, do you intend on running him with Dire Wolves? If so he'll lose his most beneficial position: the center of the infantry blocks. You know that the battle standard yields one less wound for undead, instead of giving us a pointless reroll on break or panic tests. Sure, it'd be nice if Dire Wolves took one less wound, but wolves get so far ahead or to the side of the rest of their army that other units won't benefit as much. And that benefit is the whole purpose of having a BSB.Originally Posted by And

I'd do like you and not give him a magical standard. Instead, I'd equip him with the flayed hauberk and the sword of might. With a WS of six, he's likely to hit, and with three attacks at strength six, he's potent, too. That strength modifier will leave even 1+ knights with a 4+ armor save.
Okay, I just now got your post. You listed how you currently field your thrall, right? And you're considering changing his equipage. Duh, sorry for being a bit stupid there.
As for BSB's in general, I think that they're underused. They're advantageous to any army, and since losing extra wounds to CR is always a problem for us, taking one for 25 points, or whatever it costs, will buy itself back in models saved.
On model per combat, those 25 points could go towards bound items or magic in general and you could use invocation to raise far more than that...
They are useful, but I say if you are using points on the banner anyway you might as well spend a few more and make it magical. If I take a BSB for VC it is always a wight lord, to help a unit of wights, I'd prefer to use my vampires for killing since they do that far better.
