Crown is very powerful, your Vampire Lord / Count for Blood Dragons is not a strong caster, that is a very minor setback
Have to remember, That when the your general falls, our army starts to crumble. You want your General to be able to survive, and that includeds giving him all the toys, when he starts to get weak, you just heal him.
LD 10 1,2; 3 out of 36 to become retarted - Means once per every two to three game will be stupid
LD 9 1, 2, 3; 6 our of 36 to become retarted - Means once per game he will likely be stupid
For 5 extra points and either once per two to tthree games he is stupid or once per one game he is stupid, with 50% chance of saving per wouds
verus an overcost item, and only 33% chance of saving every wound.
Rmember in most cases when your general is getting attacked it is beucase its a big nasty whacking you, and you will need everything you got.
We have all seen blood thirsters and Choas Princes all go down to warmachines shooting, thier 5 ward just does not cut it.

My lord went stupid today, but just once. For the other turns, he was fine, until the ward save failed him and he died.
The crown's a risk, but a reliable one. I don't like a 5+ ward save on a character.
The obsidian amulet can be good since he's likely to be facing enemy characters with magic weapons. Against most mundane attacks, he's okay. Again, it's a risk, but with Invocation, mostly reliable.
I never rely on 5+ wards, it just isn't good enough for the points.. Its the crown or no ward save for me. Stupidity isn't that bad of a thing, especially considering it doesn't happen very often.
And yes I did say no ward as an option, he has t5 and can heal his lost wounds so unless you put him against something really nasty he'll be perfectly fine most of the time. Keep him in a unit and charge other units with either weak characters or no characters, or even strong if you don't put him in BTB, and he will survive.
My lord failed one stupidity test yesterday, luckily not in combat. But if he had been in combat, that'd be bad...not attacking the Drucchi Annointed that had five, str 5 attacks. Bad. Still, he passed the other turns no problem.
Heheh. I don't play VC, but my buddy does, and he uses the crown on one of his hero vamps (thralls?) He plays Lahmian, and the fluff of the army is two sister vampires leading the army. So the one who got painted blonde gets the crown that makes her stupid.
Hahah. (Oh man, I'm gonna get so much negative reputation for this)
