Hi, im very new to Warhammer, decided going VC cos i always liked vampires, so far i got the VC book, Zombies (20) and Skellies (20). but i cant really pick bloodline, i checked some topics, and i decided to rule out Lahmians and Blood Dragons (blood dragons cos theyr to common), So its between Von Carstein, Necrarchs and Strigoi, Von Carstein seem a bit boring cos they have no bloodline cons or pros, Necrarchs seem very cool, but i wonder, as theyr magic users mostly, are they still decent fighters, now i care about fluff alot too, so are they really weak vampires or are they strong too, but not as skilled in combat? and about strigoi, dont like them living in Sewers that much. so can anyone help me out ?
Check the sticky topic on bloodlines...
The picture on page 55 of the army book sums up Necrarch fairly well. They are ancient and fragile looking, but are still vampires so possess more strength than mere mortals. They aren't quite as good in combat, but still fairly good.
Von Carsteins are the stereo-typical vampire, no pros no cons but have some decent bloddline powers - there more for stability than magic or combat. But they do well in either combat or magic.
Necarch can still be combat; S5 WS6 (?) and their T and A don't drop either. Not bad to say they also get a heavy magic phase, they're more for the 'horde of the living dead' type army (make sure you have lots of zombies and skellies). As for fluff, they are seen as weak but they are still vampires and still stronger than any mortal.
Strigoi are combat monsters. Whilst BDs are hero killers, these are R&F slayers. With their abilites for regen, extra attacks, hatred, wards etc Makes them quite duriable. They don't live in sewers so to speak, but more in places were they can feed and hide - so cemetries, sewers, abanonded sections of cities etc.
IIRC, base WS of Vampire Count is 7, so a Necrach Count would have Ws5.
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD
WS8 for a lord and WS7 for a count. But still, even at that level you'll be hitting on fours or threes most the time - so there should be little trouble in hitting and then wounding (S5). I still believe they could do an ok job in combat, the only problem being you'd need a ward save for them as they have no access to armour.
Necarchs are all about magic, they can still do decently in close combat, but they excel in magic. If you like magic go with these guys.
Strigori are similar to blood dragons, except they can't use weapons or armor and are meant for ripping units apart. If you like close combat killing machines but don't mind the restrictions go with these guys.
Von Carsteins are your stereotypical vampires like Ulrik said. They're the good all around, jack of all trades type. They're mostly aimed at supporting their troops with magic, blood line powers, and their combat ability. Counts and lords can't wear armor so they'll have to depend on ward saves, but thralls can wear any kind of armor. Using this bloodline also allows you to use the Army of Sylvania list (AoS).
My advice would be to choose the one you like, play them a few times and then try out a different bloodline.
I can read now!
The great thing about VC is that to change your bloodline, all you really have to do is buy a couple more models. You don't have to drastically realign your entire army as if you were changing Chaos gods in a Chaos army.
It's really quite easy to go from bloodline to bloodline, so I suggest going with the one you like first and then just switching if it doesn't suit you.
Very true. You can always just switch out the vampire models to make the new bloodline (unless that is you go for a fluff army, such as a blood dragon cavalry army. You could still just switch out the vampire models, but it would just feel wierd to play an all cavalry army with a Lhamian vampire).Originally Posted by H0urg1ass
Personally, I would go with the Lhamian bloodline...as its my personaly favorite (could you tell?), they're probably tied with strigoi as the least used army, and if tooled up right, can rip the throat out of bloodthirster in a heartbeat (no pun intended). 5 strength 6 attacks that ALWAYS go first (even if charged), on a level 3 wizard that knows 4 spells and have a 4+ ward save is nothing to scoff at.
My 40K Armies:
- Thousand Sons
- Mordian Imperial Guard
- Dark Eldar
My Fantasy Armies:
- Lhamian Vampire Counts
Strigoi are quite nice i think, still as good in magic as carstein, lahmia and better than blooddragons.
Extremely tough vampires, 5+ ward and regeneration as one of the bloodline powers, take iron sinews as well and we have 5(6 on a lord) str6 and we got a real monster :ninja:
but as other has already said, it doesnt matter really what you choose just replace the vampires.
cheers and good luck.

hot damn, go with necrarch! they absolutely DOMINATE in the magic phase, as long as they have some necromancer backup.and the best part is, they cant be hunted down and killed by eagles/scouts/flyers, because they can actually fight! just dont take them in game under 2000 pts, because they are too many points for a meer 1st level mage. but over 2000 go with them all the way!
