One of the many neat things about the undead is that they come from everywhere. Simple farmers, the worst of criminals to the most holy knights.
So my question is do any of you convert other army pieces to your VC army? If so tell us about them and how you did it (pics would be best). Myself I'm converting some DE's to Grave Guard, but not done yet. Still trying to figure out a paint thiem to pull them from fitting into a DE army into a VA one. Also thinking about a way to suppliment my Dark Knights with some cav from another Army (too expensive for how many I like to use, one game I was useing a friends lizzy cav to represent Dark Knights).
I got a bunch of 5th edition Bretonian knights from the starter boxed set and converted them into black knights.
I used zombie and skeleton spru's for the heads and some arms.
I also used a dremmel to grind off the horses ears and to add deep gouges into the flesh and cloth of the horses.
I think they look pretty darn good and they are deffiantly evil looking.
I mixed a box of zombies, a box of free company, and a box of empire soldiers to make my zombies. The result looked a lot like that guy's army in the VC book. I wanted a converted army, since the default skellies and zombies will likely look like crap compared to their replacements but I didn't want to wait till 2007 either. XD
Anyways, some soldiers got painted in pallid tones and posed in clumsy fashions. Others got head/arm transplants from the zombie sprues. I painted them in black and red - being recently deceased Sylvanian troops. Some spearmen from the 6E set, the cowering soldier from the last Giant set, and a tombstone became my Spirit Host. I used Empire Knights as my black knights. I filed away the face of the musician and painted the cavity black for a ghostly look. The others... well, they could pass as Empire knights in red and black with somewhat rusty armor. I'm a bit... utilitarian. >:3 My skeletons got the shields from the soldiers' set, and suddenly they actually looked like part of the army.
But yeah, I'd recommend people use Empire or Bretonnian knights for their Black Knights. The old 'Mounted Wight' figures they're touting as "black knights" are too expensive and aren't barded.
im using brettonian knights as my bk, and put skeleton heads in the place of normal heads, on others i made headless, and a few i embedded skulls into the helmets, like my hell knights.
I made Bret Men-at-arms with scythes and zombie bits into GG, emp knights with DE and zombie bits into Black Knights and free company into spirit hosts as well as zombies into ghouls and a wraith into a wight

I used zombies and empire to make my Zomie levy, skellys and empire to make my skelly millitia (i only made 20 guys out of two 20man boxes!: I simply replaced much of the lower arms and legs of the empire guys with skellys fore arms and legs and gave em skelly heads, also i converted em so the skelly arms held halberds converted from spears and halberd tops), and i converted my BK using empire knightly orders, cutting the lower half of the helmet off, filing the top of the skelly head off, and then sticking the skelly jaw to the knight helmet.
As for spirit hosts, ill use empire free-companys.
Thats about it.

Very nicely done. Myself I'm having some trouble with my DE converted to GG. Skelly arms and heads just don't look right, and no matter how I paint them (with original head/arms) they still look like DE warriors.
After writting a page I decided that the rest should go under the painting forum, please stop by and help me out if you have a few mins
Hmm I found the DE bits went with skeletons quite easily for the most part actually. DE arms on skellie torsos look a bit weird, the rest work.
Here are some of my WIP models:
Here are a few mostly painted ones:
i only have a cold steel army atm but that might change soon anywhoo i have a lahmian vampire so instead of the butt ugly vs skelies i used khemri ones as it fitted the theme more and they look better, i converted a banshee from khalida and am currently working on zombies with an arabian look to em
