Looking threw the rulebook makes the woodelf army seem over powerful, but of course I know paper from play. So has anyone fought a new woodelf army yet? If so what are your thoughts on it? When I'm done building my VC army I was thinking of starting woodelves next so thats why I'm extramly curious on how it compares.
I fought a 500 point force that was composed almost entirely of bows. It was either a massacre or a solid victory in my favour. Seriously, only take on wood elves if you love shooty. I one tried wood elves and regretted it.
I play VC and WE. VC was my first army, hence my user name. I went with WEs for a few reasons: the models were extremely cool, they would play really differently than VC, and it'd be unique until some other gamers got onboard with WE.
WEs offer a lot more variety in army composition. You can have a slew of different heroes thanks to the kindred rules. In fact, the hardest thing for me when building a list is to decide on what heroes to use. Then you can have a long-distance army with cavalry and flyers. Or a ultra-mobile army with lots of skirmishers. An all forest spirit army. An all elf army. An infantry based army with eternal guard, treekin, treemen, and support units.
I like having a cool dragon (better than zombie dragon IMO) and cool monsters like treemen (they are absolutely nasty, one of the heaviest hitters in the game).
I also wanted an army with a shooting phase, and wood elves don't disappoint. Having str 4 at short range is great.
Is it over-powered? Not IMO. Bret and Chaos armies are really tough to handle. Dealing with ranked units is difficult. It requires a lot of strategy about movement and deceit, march blocking, using treesinging whenever possible and having units work in tandem. Fleeing as a tactic is important and effects troop selection: do you go with ItP units that kick butt in combat or non-ItP units that can flee and set up charges?
They're both fun armies and very different from one another. WEs really made me rethink how I approach a battle.
i played woodelves from the preivew list in chronicles and loved it so when the book came out i thought okay
i played the new list like i played the old list and got completely smashed every time i tried to play it as the list now is supposed to but i just couldn't get to grips with them so my beloved wood elves are currently in limbo deciding whether i should leave them in a box until gw wakes up and makes an alternate list for us who liked the trad we or sell them on ebay and try not to cry when i pack em up
wood elves were my favorite army and i feel gw f'ed em up completely, i once asked gw members why justr why and they said that the old list was too complicated and not neewbie friendly enough but still i sugest people should still try em out in a mock game and see if ya like em the base is missle supported by skirmishers and as a whole can stand up to all list but excell against none
