Okay, I've been trolling around these boards for a few days now, looking at different strategies etc, and I've noticed that everyone seems to ignore the Bat Swarms. Anyone want to share some strategies etc about using these little buggers?
I don't know, I've used them once during 6th, and they did ok, but now that they crumble I just don't think they're worth it anymore. They weren't that good before either.
If you want a swarm, use Spirit Host, at least they can only be hurt by magic. Bat Swarms get killed in combat, then crumble, and can't even charge as far as Spirits. Ok, they have 360 degree charge arc, but only unit strength 1 per base. Spirit Hosts can break ranks, and actually have a chance of breaking a ranked unit if it gets a good charge.
In my opinion Bat Swarms don't do anything that isn't done better by Spirit Host, Fell Bats or others. Swarms were traditionally used as a tarpit, but zombies does that better anyway.
I know you asked for strategies, and not for a comparison, but why use them when there are so much better choices available? Anyway, hopefully they will get redone (or dumped) for the new armybook, so maybe they'll be useful again.
Sorry if I sound negative, but that's how I feel about the Bat Swarms.
Edit: If you were to use them, fly them up the flank and use for marchblocking, and tying up small support units, like enemy fast cavalry.

Well, i asked because I fell in love with the VC's and in going to my local hobby store the only things they really had were 1 box of Zombies, 2 blisters of Bat Swarms and about 15 blisters of blood dragons. I personally dont like the flavor of the blood dragons and wanted to go with a magic heavy force. I was able to get a Necrarch vampire blister though.
Spirit hosts are much better: negate ranks, get a flank/rear bonus, and ethereal. And go 12 inches instead of 10.
The fact that bat swarms fly is nice, but it's still limited to half the range of normal flyers.
ANd yes, bat swarms now crumble, just as spirit hosts always have.
Spirit hosts can be healed and bat swarms can not.
I'm pretty sure you can only heal wounds on models still in play, the other option sound more like Tomb Kings. Plus it says in the spell description that you choose one undead model, and restore wounds to it, and you can't take the models wounds above starting value.
I never considered spirit hosts as a healable unit (is "healable" a word at all?).
This means either my opponent gets a rid of a whole base with magical damage, or during my turn I can restore it to full\nearly full life ? Definitely cool +____+
