Sword of Might
Nehekhara's Noble Blood
Book of Arkhan
I am about to start vampire counts and I want to know which vampire Lord will suit me best. I am going to be facing wood elves and I plan on using Tons of skeletons and zombies to overwhelm them.
Please could you tell me which would be best suited to taking on wood elves and if I should change anything. Thank you!:w00t:
I'm Useless :D
i havnt been playing vampires for that long, but i can suggest some things.
if u plan on using alot of skellies/zombies, it might be better to use the necrarch, because hes the better wizard so can summon more guys. however, if u do, u have to give him a ward save of some kind (at least ring of the night) or he will die, so drop the book.
for your blood dragon, id suggest that u drop the flayed hauberk and pick up enchanted shield instead. its alot cheaper and since u start with a 4+, the +2 for the shield will get you to 2+ for a third of the points. because you have master strike, sword of might isnt that usefull as youll want a 6 anyways. with the points u saved from the hauberk/shield switch, you can get red fury. combined with heart piecer, youve got a very good chance of getting your KB off. However, unless your vampire is on a mount(which would be a good idea, the barded nightmare would give him a 0+ save with the shield:ninja
the problem i see with the strigoi is that because of hatred, he will have to pursue. seeing as your playing wood elves, this could lead to yor losing the game because your big bad vampire cant find the sneaky elves. if you give him the fly ability, he might be able to hide behind a rokc untill hes close enough to butcher some elves. see, you dont need the 5 wounds if the elf can avoid you the whole game. id drop the eternal hatred, against the elves you should be able to break em in one round.
over all, id say the necrarch has the best chance. hes quite resilient, being a vampire. he has the most magical might, which youll need to summon warrriors and danse your units into his. his lower weapon skill will hurt, and his bad save will hurt even more. however, the pros far outweigh the cons, moreso then any other vampire.
Ouch, targetfixed! Hit that shift key once in a while.
The Strigoi does not have to pursue. That's frenzy, not hatred.
As for which lord, I think it's your style of play. First, I'd say go for a count and add a thrall with the freed hero slot. Undead troops are notoriously poor in hand to hand and benefit greatly from the killing power of a nice thrall or count. Then add two necromancers--you need IoN in order to win consistently.
The Strigoi you have would mow down elves. The Necrarch would kill some in hand to hand, but do much better in the magic phase. The Blood Dragon would also have a field day killing elves, but at the expense of a weakened magic phase.
I don't think you can wrong; it just comes down to what you prefer: combat or magic. As for combat, I've decided that I'd rather have a Strigoi than a Blood Dragon.
When I play Strigoi, I ignore my advice and take a lord instead of a count for a few reasons. First, I have only one Strigoi model. Second, a lvl 3 user doesn't need any of the army dice in the casting phase. I can give the two army dice to the two necromancers so that each caster has three dice.
That means that I can attempt IoN three times, with three dice each attempt, on a lvl 7. Almost guaranteed success.
If you will be playing wood elves have you thought about a von carstien with call winds.
Call winds will affect their shooting which is extremely useful ase wood elf archery will slaugter both skeletons and zombies plus there mobility means its not easy to engage them unless you have the faster elements of the vc army ie wolves, bats, knights. Even ghouls as there skirmishers and t4.
Just something for you to think about.
BEN DIESEL FTW!!!

third paragraph down
"Troops who hate their enemy must always pursue them if they flee"
so for dark elves for instance, they HAVE to pursue high elves. but they dont have to pursue goblins say. Likewise, strigoi hate everything and everyone, so must ALWAYS pursue.
i feel like some one is gonna ban me because they think i was rude... (im permenantly afraid of banishment since i dont consider myself offensive)
a note on call winds
while it will hinder their shooting, it also mwean your vampire (a big chunk of points, your general and so on) will not get to move. i personnally like it, but its very difficult to use effectivly.
if u only want to use 1 of the three blood types you put up there... for a skeleton mass army, i'd sugest the nekrach (i probably spelled that wrong) because of their magic prowess. this means that you can summon up many skeletons and replesnish units that suffer the inevitable shooting casualties.
but you shouldn't use a vampire lord until you get past 2500 points or even more. otherwise its too large a percentage of your point total to have. even though they kick ass its not worth it.
so start small. i had a vampire thrall destroy 6 orge bulls single handedly. no small feat.
good luck with your decideing
Vampire counts 0-0-1
I think the consensus is that a lord is too many points in one model for 2000 pts. I feel that is right. I have tried all the bllodline types and the Von Carstein suits my style of play best, I play tournament quite a bit and I never know what my opponent is bringing to the table. I think your best bet is to experiment. A BD count is nearly as killy as a Lord in my opinion, the points saved will get you the necromancers that will win you the game.
The only piece of advice I would give you is to invest in a ward save for your general. If he dies you are knackered.
Arms are an instrument of evil, No measure for thoughtful men until there fail all other choice but sad acceptance of it.

Well I have my list that I'm planning to use in the list sections, Which of these lords would suit that list??
Keep in mind that I'm probably going to drop the Winged nightmare for wolves, bats or zombies.
And if I don't use Necrarch I will drop the dragon for the same kind of things.
