Hmm... well im not sure how to put this, I played undead since 4th ed "herohammer" before the faction split *gags* happened. I really just plain dont like vampires, I just like necromancer fluff much more then bored aristocrats. Maybe I am jaded by the goth kids that all roleplay vampires, Could be the ex-girlfriends love of them, im not sure =D. I was hoping to find a few pointers as I am finally able to seriously start playing again. Ive probably made 10-15 army lists but feel I will often be overcome and crushed by any elite units, ive pondered everything from using about 20 black knights to sticking a master necro on a zombie dragon for giggles and a unique approach. I would be grateful for any advice you guys can throw my way.
Thanks in advance
Hmmm - no Vampires eh? Well first I will salute you for your bravery. But I will have to poiunt out to you the weakness's of this plan:
Vampires are the only thing that really really pack a punch and can turn that combat in your favour.
Necromancers are a lot more fragile than Vampires, so keeping him alive is going to be a lot more difficult than keeping your Vampire alive.
So how would you play a list that really doesn't pack much of a punch but is loaded to the teeth with magic?
Let's start with the Obvious, you'd have a lvl 4 Necromancer at least 2 lvl 2's and maybe a third, or take a hero like a Wraith to add some terror to your army, or a Wight lord with Sword of the Kings, although neither of these will bother a fighty lord character in combat, so i'd probably opt for the extra wizard.
So Power Dice:
4 LvL 4 wizard
2 level 2 wizard
2 level 2 wizard
2 level 2 wizard
TOTAL: 12 Power Dice (and 7 Dispel)
Now if you haven't played much Vampire Counts and you want to know what the best unit is, that's simple. Zombies - load and loads of zombies. In 2000 points I take 3 units of 30 of them. No enemy army has enough shooting or can do enogh combat damage to kill 30 zombies in a single turn, and they never ever break. Tag this with the fact that you have 4 wizard, all of whom should have the Invocation Spell (the most vital spell) they could be raising regiments of the guys per turn. Your enemy will never be able to kill them off.
Just incase you're not convinced by the idea of zombies i'll just give you a quick reasoning to why they are your best unit choice.
- They are 6 points per model (your cheapest infantry so you can get lots)
- You raise an extra zombie per Invocation level as appose to Skeletons
- They Cause Fear (their best weapon)
- They never ever break
- They may not be good in combat, but let's be honest, is it worth paying 10 points for an armoured skeleton with I2, and the same weapon skill? No. Zombies tie up enemy units and let the big characters do the damage. As you won't have the bigchracters you'll have to focus on the flanking. Once you win a round of combat your enemy should be outnumbered by a Fear causing unit and break on anything but double 1'2.
So, other units I would definatly consider for your army:
2 Banshees running around double teaming enemy units with their scream. Can be VERY effective, and it's not often Banshees don't earn their points back.
Spirit Hosts 3-4 bases. These are awesome flank defenders and for taking on enemy Cavalry that left their magic items at home.
Ghouls, again excellent flank defenders, fear causing and with T4 with skirmishing, enemy shooting will be hard push to get them. 2 poisoned attacks each is also fun
Fell Bats. In my 2000 points i take 10 of them and go for artillery crew. The enemy like to shoot at them, but with 20 wounds in total is takes a lot to kill them.
I know you don't want Vampires, but if you ever did consider it, and it seem like you like Magic i'd go for Necrach. 2000 Points is Count lvl 3, Thrall lvl 1 & 2 lvl 2 Necro's. The Vampires are still good spell casters (+1 to all spells) and can still pack a bit of a punch in combat.
Hope this helps.
Thanks I am just out the door on my way to get a box of zombies, I had never fully explored there usefulness like that. Very good advice I greatly appreciate it. Also what units other then boxed zombies make for good zombies?
I have bought a box of soldiers of the empire, and then mixed in some spare zombie bits. Cut off an arm here, make a hole in a breastplate there, and it looks like you have a defeated empire unit raised into your service. Add in a few gravestones and make it look like the zombies are clawing their way out of their graves, and you have a really cool looking zombie unit. Its will really intimidate any empire player you'll meet too
Rork edit: Woah! Check your spelling - you only give "special chocies" to your girlfriend.
if u dont wanna spend all ur money on zombies, just have heads or arms poking out of basses. it saves money and looks cool. i agree lob in some grave stones. i also love zombies because every turn you can go:
also before the battle, look at your opponant and say
"as you are, we once were. as we are, you will be."
it works wonders on their nerves...
