Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm a lizardmen player who's been looking into vampire counts recently and i heard that they were in for a remake soon, so i searched for the info only to find unclear debates now my only very simple question is when will they be remade?
1:find what makes him tick
2:stop the ticking
It's still unclear. The first rumors were that VC would be redone this summer or winter. Of course, the first is obviously not true. High Elves are being released sometime soon, and at least one picture of a new HE sprue has surfaced.
The talk tends to go that VC will follow High Elves, and that Dark Elves will follow VC.
Judging from the rumors and GW's tendency to fall short with timelines, I'd say it'd be winter at the earliest. Of course, GW does like to try and put out new releases just before Christmas. Maybe we'll get lucky.
I am looking foward to see what happens to Wraiths as it is a brave VC general who takes them at the moment.
I don't know what non VC players think but personally I think the VC are pretty powerful and GW may well re-do some of the units (Wights possibly). On the other hand if the general consensus is that VC are a fairly balanced army then we may be in for a treat with the new list as GW always like to give some (at least one) new juicy units.
Their continued popularity at tournaments suggests that they are seen, by players at least, as a very powerful army. Myself, I think they have some huge advantages, which are pretty obvious to anyone even halfway familiar with the army.
I'd love to see something new with wights. I'm not sure how different zombies or skeletons could be, though I'd love to see some new skeleton sprues that incorporated skeletal remains of non-human races.
I would not be surprised if Wights get changed quite alot (i.e made weaker). Simply by taking away Banner of the Barrows suddenly Wights become very expensive for what you get.
I would not expect to see the VC book before the new year. I know the high elf book is due for december so I would expect at least another 2 months. In terms of units I don't think much needs changing, perhaps some extra options because we seem a little light on units at the moment. Zombie could do with losing a point or so and I think skeletons could do with the option for double handed weapons. Wights are powerful but still only 1 attack each, and used without the banner of the barrows they are not so powerful although the T4 is good. I want to see the coach revised because IMO its too expensive for what you get, compare with the Skaven screaming bell. I'm hoping for a hero that can lead my army that is not a necro or necrach in under 2000 point games too. And some better magic items!
Arms are an instrument of evil, No measure for thoughtful men until there fail all other choice but sad acceptance of it.

the thing i'm most looking forward to are some new, proper models for zombies.
Zombies are my absolute favourite fantasy-creature, but the current models are kinda... goddamn awful?
anyhoo, new zombies makes hezu a happy chitlin!
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

GW release schedule. HE are definitely next, and are coming october/november in the first wave.
After that will either be DE or VC. The favourites ATM to be released first is VC, so expect them around mid next year with some more solid rumours/info by christmas this year.
As was pointed out above, the current VC list is certainly playable, and even strong from a win-some-games standpoint. It's chief flaw (in my opinion, of course) is not in it's overall performance, but in the breadth of the list. Unlike most other armies, we have an ultra-broad character base, thanks to the Blood Lines, but a thin army list, lacking several whole categories of units. While I like that breadth of characters, the problem is that many of them are underwhelming, and in any case, the characters are not the bulk of the army.
Though I'm sure it would pain players who like other blood lines, I think the VC army list needs more focus. More focus in character choices, with the characters being more different from one another, and more focus in army theme as well. I'd like for them to embrace a more singular vision of the Vampire Counts army, as they have for (for example) Tomb Kings. Personally, I'd prefer something darkly magical - necromancy, the draining of life energy, and so forth - but I suspect that the 'horror movie classics' theme is more likely, give their love of the VonCarsteins (who I've always fount terribly cliche).
Here are some thoughts on what I'd like to see:
More Focused Characters
- Trim the lines to Blood Dragons (Melee), Necrarchs (Casty), and VonCarsteins (Hybrid)
- Give each blood line fully unique character stats, rather than modifying the base line case
- Eliminate necros and masters, but make Necrarchs much more wizardly and less hybrid
- Save the others for WD or online release where they'll get more cool and unique designs
- Make the Wraith a rare choice with less (or no) magic item choices, rather than a hero
- Keep the Wight Lord as a highly generic cheep character to carry your Battle Standard.
Broader Rare & Special List
- Add a elite chariot type unit crewed by Grave Guard, along the lines of the Chaos Chariot
- Add some kind of bruiser unit, a Bone Golem maybe, along the lines of Ushabti or Ogres
- Add a mega-bruiser unit, along the lines of the Bone Giant or Dragon Ogre Shaggoth
- Add an elite flying unit as a better countermeasure to enemy artillery and siege equipment
- Add the option to take 'buried' skeleton units (tunneling) as a special unit choice
- Add 'war machine' type units with beneficial magic abilities, for example, an Icon of Nagash
Stronger Army Themes
- Eliminate the 'all the undead we could think of at lunch' feel and develop a solid theme
- Let players customize various units depending on blood line, similar to chaos marks
Edit to add: As far as the models go, I think almost everything could use some improvement. Multi-racial skeletons would be cool, but honestly, that's the bottom of my list. I'd like less exaggerated, more detailed vampires, a black coach that is more thoroughly detailed (and that fits together properly), and about a dozen other things. They mostly come down to more detail, less exaggeration, and parts that actually fit.
