Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey there all.
Now, I have played fantasy for nearing 2 years now, and I have been the victim of many a gunline peppering where by turn three, I have only 1/4 to none of my army left to fight the troops. Being a chaos player, there is not much I can do except for launching magic spell after magic spell at them until they die, or taking a hellcannon or some leadbelchers and just bombing the hell out of the other side until there's a big enough hole for me to charge into. Problem with both of these tactics, is that the first is usually dispelled against a dwarf player or out magicked by an empire player who uses just lore of heavens (which sux when alll of his damn mages 'mystically' are able to get comet of casandora)
My question (and this may be the wrong place to ask it) is how does one effectively beat a gunline army (in general).
To be honest i think this post would be more suited to the general Fantasy forum, the topic probably suits a wider range of response other than just 'rules'.
Indeed, this really isn't a rules question.
Ok now ill actually go about trying to help answer your question. First off though, what type of Chaos do you play? Army composition? Mortal, Beast, Daemon? Mark?
Some kind of starting point for tactics based on what you have available would be handy.
Well, when I play Hordes I tpically take a healthy number of marauders and chariots with knights to soak up the rest of the points (and their hounds)
When I play beasts its typicaly a ton of Beast Herds and then I own quite a lot of different things to mix and match to meet that 2000 point limit (even ogres:rofl)
im not an avid Chaos player but why dont you just ambush with beasts? throw some herd and hounds and you army turn and use them as bullet shields for your expensive chaos troops
Ill start with the beasts, they probably have the simplet solution.
Take advantage of the ambush rule. Assuming you opponant has 4 warmachines or something stupidly dwarfy, then that means you are going to be wanting 4 ambush herds atleast, given that the chances are some will fail their Ld rolls.
Bring them on in the second turn, i.e asap, and then get charges in asap too, using magic if possible if you are willing to ambush a Shaman with staff of Darkoth. This will require a bit of heavy magic offensive though, so b willing to spend the points there.
Also hounds make great units as they are so cheap and hence can be very numerous. Get some of those in too.
As for hordes, they are slightly more dificult. Thinking about minimaising casualties on your way there, Units of Knights, 5-6 strong in a single line, will take less damage from a cannonball, and also template weapons will kill less than if they hit a full Marauder or Warrior unit. Ofcourse each casualty alone is more costly, but with enough Knight unis, i think most should get through ok.
Also being hard as nails in combat, i think your best bet here will be to take 3+ units of 5-6 Chaos Knights, with your uber combat gGenaral mounted and in with the Chosen unit. Just run at the enemy as fast as possible.
Add in a few Chariots for tactical diversity, and to offer up another target to the enemy, Guys on foot are too slow to be running head on at a Gunline, so id say avoid them.
Again hounds etc, as you do, for cheap, fast expendible troops.
Hope this lot is some help atleast
Good point, i totally forgot about the demonic flyers. A unit of 5-6 furies is a commonly seen unit and is pretty effective. Screamers make a good mage hunting unit as all they have to do is fly over the enemy, which is so easy to do.
thanks a lot both of you guys. The ambush is great, but I only tried it twice and the general got sniped by the dwarf player (as he can guess any distance he wants with his cannons) so I think I'll just have to get lucky and put him in a nice beefy unit like my pestigors or maybe even a healthy beastie herd.
