I've been playing lizardmen for awhile bt I'm thinking of fielding a second army and I'm not sure whether I should do Bretonnia and Empire. Brettonia has knights, heraldy, and while the pesants are relatively unreliable the differenyt knights more than make up for it (plus their's the green knight and I love green). As for the Empire they have knights as well and are very versatile through the detachment system, artillery, support, infantry, and cavalry. I'm so conflicted and as for painting I feel they would both be interesting to paint so please any input on play style and feel from experience players would be much appreciated.
How much do you want to be able to participate in all phases of the game? Brets can do movement, combat, magic defence and a tiny bit of shooting and generally thats it.
Empire can easily do an all round army.
Any preference there?
See that's why i want Empire because of their versatility but I still like the feel of Bretonnia (although I also like Empire). So currently I want Empire but I could still be swayed to Bretonnia by any experienced players who offer some good reasons to choose them. Plus the Brets very chivalrous and I'd like to paint them wih all the heraldry.
I know this is an old post, but I though I'd just throw in my 2 cents, as somebody who spent some time deliberating whether I should go with Empire or Bretonnia. I chose Bretonnia for several reasons.
They both had many traits in common that appealed to me (history based, very nice model range, etc), but the reason Bretonnia won was firstly my play style, which has always emphasized the importance of mobility (my first 40k army was Emperor's children, with 13 bikers and 4 rhinos). Some look at a Bretonnian army's high movement rates and think "CHARGE!", I look at it and think "My opponent fights on my terms, not his."
Secondly, if I were to make an Empire army, I would use a minimal amount of gunpowder and in doing so, I would skip many of the strongest units in the army. I do love artillery though, and thankfully, Bretonnian Trebuchets are nothing to scoff at (I plan on fielding 2 in 2,000 pts).
Third, Infantry. Empire has some very cool, versatile infantry. Bretonnia has some pitiful, dumb, incompetent peasants with spears that are going to run away as soon as possible. Or not. Properly lead, I think Bretonnia has some of the most cost-efficient infantry around (except maybe Empire Swordsmen). Their bowmen, in particular (despite their low BS, they come with Longbows and defensive stakes for a couple points less than an Imperial archer). Plus they can make cheap skirmishers. Plus no VPs for their standards is always nice.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, were the characters. Bretonnian has some highly customizable characters, with a big variety of Virtue, Vow and Magic Item combinations which can be highly specialized, very powerful and/or very flavorful. With Empire (even though they have more character options), I felt like all I could really do is try to get as good stats as possible and hope that was enough to carry the day.
And that's just the tactical/list building stuff.
Ah, it's not that old!
I'd say collect Empire. If you want to make a hierarchial-type force, then you can. Just include Free Company and lots of Knights. The Empire also have the added advantage of versatility. If you get bored of one theme, move onto another.
I had a very similar decision to make (only throw in dwarves too) and I came up with the empire (and am still slightly unsure - gah!).
There's a lot of chance to show off your painting with both Brets and Empire. Painting freehand on banners and heraldry can be a reaaal pain though – do try a test model there. It was enough to put me off!
I'd play test the bretonnians to see if they're the kind of playing style you like - I do like smashing units on the charge and running them down, but I'd miss not being able to do anything significant in the other phases of the game.
I had a simalar decision to make, then I read the two army's tactics on different sites. This really gives a feel for the play style, after reading TVI (the village idiot's empire tactics, AKA the battalion method) I fell in love with the empire. That was because it dawned on me, not only are detachmens great, they also fit my play style perfectly. Read similar tactics on bretonia, and then dicide.
