Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was just wondering what everyone thought was most important when picking an army. For example
I have empire because they fit my play style but I am not a big fan of the fluff or models. Just seem like boring humans to me.
I thought about dwarfs because I love the fluff but I am not a big fan of the play style. I don't like just sitting and waiting for the charge.
Just wondering what every else thinks is the most important factor when picking an army.
For me it's a toss-up between models and fluff. I mean, I want an army that looks really good, so it has to have good looking models. But then, if the background for that army doesn't appeal to me, I'd probably pass them up.
I think that's why I chose Vampire Counts over Dark Elves or Chaos. Yes, they all have really nice models that made me want to collect them... but the Vampires just won out because of their fluff, and because I ended up coming up with a back story to them that I really liked.
they can move faster then dwarfs plus they have their knights and magic so I never really looked at empire as wait for charge
A nice balance of the 3 tbh... the problem with the WH armies is they are all so appealing to me. Particularly the models....
Playstyle is pretty important too, I like Undead particularly for their unique rules - fluff is probably least of my priorities when choosing.
"Well... that hurt" - Vampire Jon Skellan (Mannfred's right hand man) after being beaten up, falling down an underground waterfall and being impaled by a stalactite.
Fluff is my lowest priority as well. Its not that I dont care, but Fluff can be made up to an extent.
Current painting project: 2300 pts of Dwarfs in 5 weeks.
i chose mainly on models and fluff.. but that because i didn't start my collection with the intention to play battles.. i just wanted to paint nice looking models.. after i while i noticed i liked the HE models the most and i stuck to it

Hmm, think I chose Brets origionally more on Models, maybe a lot on fluff as well, and also play style. I started back when bretonnians were released in 5th I think it was, under the guise of the noble knights who hated missile weapons and wouldn't use bows, back with the first incarnation of the lance that was a pain on the table. Back then I loved the models, liked the idea of playing with a quick army, and loved the nobleness of the knights. I think my underlying first thing is I don't like playing with 'evil' armies, though the more you get into the fluff of everyone this does come into it. They love their shades of grey. I think fluff is definately important, I would hate to play with an army I didn't like the fluff of.
I think Playstyle is possibly the more inportant thing when it comes to a second army, as I would either want something similar to what I was familiar with, or in fact more likely to be something completely different, playing around with aspects of the game I don't get to use as much. However I still think fluff would be my most important thing. Models, now I don't consider as important, it just makes it more of a challenge to make your army look cool!
Ok, after that long winded waffle I think Fluff is prob my most important factor overall
To be honest, for me it has to be the models.
After all, even though I may play with unpainted models from time to time as they are still WIP or brand new, etc., it is my belief that unless you love your models, love to paint your models, and love looking at your models, there is no point in you playing that army.
I don't believe in choosing an army based on FOTM or they've just got an "uber" army book (in fact im notorious in my group for playing old codexes/army books lol). Playstyle can be adjusted for quite a few armies. In short, hypothetically if Empire was the end-all be-all unstoppable army I still wouldnt play them because their models don't appeal to me at all.
The great thing about this game is it's room to expand/create fluff for your specific army.
In summary, its all up to you man. Some players only want Melee based armys, some guys love to shoot far across the board. Some guys play evil armies, some play neutral and make up their own fluff for alignment. Some guys love pewter models and choose an army based on that, and some guys wont want a damn thing to do with metal.
A good general will adapt to his/her army's strengths and weaknesses. My vote goes to models then fluff.
me too! for me its 90% the models, rest is the feel of the army on the tabletop
If i dont love the models i cannot get myself to paint them >.<
overpowered units or armybooks tend to turn me off,
and sometimes i deploy some crappy unit just because i just finished painting it
