Rock solid; heavy armour (Dwarfs)
Skirmishers (Lizards, Wood Elves)
Close Combat (WoC, Ogres)
Range heavy (Empire, HE)
Magic heavy ? (Undead)
Swarm; gimmickicy (Skaven, Orcs and Gobbos)
I'm thinking about 500pt games as I've recently got into them a lot.
I don't want to start the old "every army has its strengths" whinging, because I seriously believe that in small games there are some imbalances, Jervis did admit after all that they designed the game with 2000pts in mind. For instance, I think that Dwarfs are extremely hard in small games (esp with an organ gun), along with Skaven who can field Rat Ogres and obliterate the enemy (or themselves) with Warp lightning.
Anyway, who do you think does particularly well in 500pts? The poll is generalised, please post specific armies below
"Well... that hurt" - Vampire Jon Skellan (Mannfred's right hand man) after being beaten up, falling down an underground waterfall and being impaled by a stalactite.
I think a shooty Dark Elf army would be nasty at that level, especially if supported by a Hydra. All those AP shots and terror causer with a mean set of rules will give a lot of people headaches.
BEN DIESEL FTW!!!
A skirmishing swarm, backed up by an artillery piece ( or two)
Either a whole lot of skinks or nice groups of skaven skirmishers and some gattling guns
Warchief Diggah o da Bloodmoon Squiggahs
I would say orcs and goblins or beasts of chaos.
You can have TONS of variety in a 500 point ork and goblin list.
You can get a hero, 2 blocks of core, and 2 war macines.
Or 3 units of cav, 1 ranked unit a hero and some pump wagons...
the options are almost limitless. 500 point orc and goblin gun line? ok 1 ock lobba, 4 spear chukka's 1 doom diver, two units of 10 arrer boys adn a mage ect ect
Or beasts as they are relitivly cheap, skirmish the beast herd models are fantastic and they really fit the "feel" of a small raiding party.
Armies with lots of models. Like Empire, they can also really dominate the shooting phase. Cheap captain with 2-3 units of shooters and some war-machines or outriders etc.
I'm gonna have to disagree with all of you here. No one can put up a better all mounted list than WoC at 500. Not to mention one of the most diverse lists w/o any shooting.
Get your sorcerer on a horse, pick up a min unit of knights and 2 min units of marauder horsemen. Then its just a matter of picking which ones have frenzy.
