This should be obvious but I've confused myself into a circle and I want third party clarification.
a model in heavy armor and a shield normally has a base armor save of 4+ with a 3+ to the front. IF said model is also carrying a great weapon and chooses to use it in combat, they do not get the shield bonus at all right? just a regular heavy armor save of 5+?
I'm asking because my buddy equiped his hammerers with shields, but only fought with great weapons, so when being shot at, he had a 4+ save, but in combat we should hae only worked it out as a 5+ save correct? since he only used his great weapons.
or does the shield somehow just give him a base 4+ save all the time with a 3+ to the front if he's using it? this one doesn't make sense, but I somehow convinced myself it's possible. Hence the need for clarification.
If you use great weapons you can't use a shield (IN combat), and you only get the +1 combat save if your weapon is described as a HAND WEAPON. Hope that clears stuff up
5000 Pts of Undeath descend upon you....
I always thought they did. That they would fight like a normal phalanx where the front row is holding shields up and I guess using hand weapons while the back two rows are thrusting with spears.
So would that mean spearmen either get 5 attacks with a 4+ armor save or 15 attacks with a 5+ armor save? I was always doing 15 attacks at a 4+
You only get the additional +1 armor save if you are using a "Hand Weapon" and a shield. Any other weapon will only get you the +1 that a shield normally gives you.
