Welcome to Librarium Online!
Pretty much the title says it all.
Used to play lizardmen several years ago and haven't been back since then. Been mainly playing 40k but now considering returning. The one problem is that I have no idea if I plan to return to lizardmen or try and pick up something else for a fresh start. I have so far been mainly considering ogres, orcs and goblins, lizardmen, skaven, warriors of chaos and possibly vampires. Ok, so not really a mainly. Can't seem to make my mind up at all. These ideas I have based simply on looking at the models online and going I like how those ones look, I might start them. I have tried to take a look at some of the tacticas and the individual forums for each of them as well and was just wondering if people would be able to give me an idea of the general play style of each of them.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. sorry if this in the wrong place. Had a look around and thought that this seemed to be the best place to put it.
Moved to FB armies.
Rules is solely for asking about rules.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
Welcome to Fantasy! My first question to you would be what your planning to get from your army? are you a collector, painter or gamer or all of the above? Do you recall generally how the game works from back when you played your Lizardmen?
without knowing generally what your looking for in an army I would have to redirect you to forums that specifically deal with each of these Fantasy armies. All of these armies have thier own respective forums online, not to mention there is a sub-forum for each of these races on Librarium Online if you haven't already read everything there (theres alot to read).
now here is my personal opinion as I do have access to nearly every current army book and have played against most of the armies in question, so from a tactical and gameplay standpoint ill give you my views on the armies I feel I have enough knowledge to comment on:
- Ogre Kingdoms are a VERY characterful army with access to mostly multiwound monsters as troops, with cheap Gnoblar (goblinesque) screens. thier general lack of any cavalry units (besides Yetis who are grosely overpriced) and random shooting makes it difficult to play like most other armies, but with a base movement of 6 your Ogres are a quite a force in the movement phase and not to mention the combat phase. Sadly due to the Ogre's army book being outdated they have an extremely underpowered list IMO, thier form of magic (gut magic) is ineffectual at best against magic heavy armies (very common these days) and many of thier special rules (Bull Charge comes to mind) are in need of an overhaul. Underpowered, but fun to play and play against, also offering many great modelling and painting opportunities. I beleive they are slated to be redone after O&G's and Tomb Kings, so possibly this year or the next,so you might want to wait before you start collecting Ogres.
- Warriors of Chaos are the iconic followers of Chaos, hard as nails and implacable in assault these mortal men live to serve the gods of Chaos and are rewarded by these fickle powers if they should please them on the field of battle. So WoC is my preferred army for more reasons than I can list in one post. They offer you limitless conversion opportunities, and you canpaint them however you like (especially the warrior models) and they always look badazz. Gameplay wise they are one of the stronger lists out now, with access to devestating magic, THE best close combat units and characters in the game, and arguably the best cavalry unit (Knights of Chaos) you will not be left wanting if you decide to worship the Chaos gods. Marks and gifts of Chaos, access to incredibly powerful wargear and magic items and the Eye of the gods table; an army specific 'rule' that allows you to buff your character after he destroys an opposing character in a challenge or defeats a monstrous creature. all of these things allow you to field the most devesating array of champions and characters possible. Your troops can be made up of hoardes of marauders, elite blocks of chaos Warriors and Chosen with the best troop statline in the entire game, or Marauder Horsemen and Chaos Knights. not to mention you have the ability to field all types of monsters (everything from trolls to Dragon Ogre Shaggoths and giants) allows for incredible diversity in your army. the biggest downside of playing WoC is that your basically absent in the shooting phase, no shooting (beside a stonethrower and some throwing axes, maybe). Also you have limited access to flyers and have no access to any type of skirmishing units (unless you decide to take some from DoW). Expensive units and characters make for a small, elite army, but one that looks great and plays even better.
- Lizardmen I have played against enough to know that they are a very healthy competitor. Slaan Mage Priests are arguably the best wizards in the game, with access to any lore in the Big Book, and the capacity to be the BSB (army battle standard bearer) and to be placed in one of the toughest block infantry units in the game (Temple Guard) making for a powerful and very tough leader for your army. Lizardmen can contribute to every phase of the game, and have access to every type of unit available in Warhammer, other than chariots, but with massive stegadons tearin it up who really needs chariots? your basic troops include skirmishing skinks who are very versatile and able to shoot with multiple poisoned attacks. Your saurus are as tough as a brick sh*thouse and when in combat and armed with spears can throw back a rediculous amount of high-strength attacks, they are easily comparable to Chaos Warriors in function and when it comes to stats. having access to flyers, monstrous creatures with the ability to shoot breath weapons and stegadons with multiple uses and configurations makes for a well-rounded list. Also many players are drawn to the fluff of the Lizardmen, as they played a major role in helping the Old Ones in thier design of the Warhammer World and also played an even bigger role in thwarting Chaos. Lizardmen along with the High Elves are as close as you'll get to a 'good guy' army in Warhammer. I'm sure there is alot more to say about Lizardmen but i'll leave that to the actual Lizzie players.
O&G's and Skaven I have little experience with so I won't comment.
Hopefully this helps you to decide what flavor of army your looking for in Warhammer Fantasy. Good luck making your decision, happy gaming!
Thanks for the quick response and welcome.
I think that I would class myself as all three. If i had to try and rank them i Think probably gamer, painter, collector. I think that I can vaguely remember how things worked when I used to play but I think that there may have been a rule book update since then. I have been taking a look through the sub forums and have also managed to borrow some army books from friends to have a look through. I feel that I have ruled out skaven to an extent now. While I like the models I just think that i would get sick of painting all that fur.
I think that at this moment I am mainly drawn to the ogres or WoC. In both cases I like the models a lot. As well as this, while I like my painting I am rather slow at it and like to take my time so I think that armies with small model numbers would probably be my best choice. Just realistically considering the time it would take me to paint them all. I do still like the lizards but I feel like going with a fresh start for my return so that rules them out, at least for just now.
So at this point I feel that I am yet to formulate an opinion on O&G, skaven and lizardmen are out, but ogres and WoC are definitely in with a bit of a leaning towards WoC. Update wise I would be fine to wait as I probably wouldn't be starting until I have saved up some money for a bit, so realistically probably some time next year.
Still open to any other opinions though.
P.S. Just wanted to say sorry for putting it in the wrong area. Was fairly sure it was the wrong place but hadn't spotted the general thread under the army sub-forums so wasn't really sure where to put it. Will take more care in future.
