Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi all. My local store is doing a fantasy challenge which is, one monster, one 30 man infantry unit, one hero and no points limits.
I figure this will be good way to get into fantasy, so my question is what is the best combination? I ask as my fantasy knowledge is rather poor.
Wow, no points?
Galrauch , chosen, chaos lord. If they give you trouble with Galrauch being a character then you could always go with a shaggoth and a chaos sorcerer.
Monster: Greater Daemon of Khorne w/ armor to make him immune to magic weapons (oh so sick) and as many other ugly bits of gear as you can fit onto him
Infantry: 30 BloodLetters, for the awesomeness that they can be. If you wanted to be a jerk and let your Character and Monster do all the dirty work, you could field Pink Horrors for pretty well-leveled Wizard casting spells around. Their sod-all in combat though.
Hero: Skulltaker on a Juggernaut. Heroic KillingBlow on a 5+? HELL YES! The Jug gives him a great armor save on top of his already reasonable ward, and it makes him immune to stomps.
Although if they have issues with the fact that a Greater Daemon is technically a Character, well... I don't know what my next choice would be. Hydra, 30 Corsairs, and the nastiest Lord you can come up with?
Sadly, Sarthai is right, it doesn't get any sicker than his option...can the character be on the monster, or does perhaps a monster-mounted character count as just a character? I'm thinking along the lines of karl franz on imperial dragon with hammer...it's like 750 points, but it's extremely nasty...I guess you'd be on the weak end of the infantry unit setup, though, since the best you could do is greatswords.
I'm thinking WoC would give you the best infantry with a block of 30 chaos warriors...I mean, they're basically steroid-eating grail knights on foot...not so familiar with WoC characters and monsters, though...
I think another good direction could be beastmen...you could take 30 bestigors...S6/T4, WS4 with a 5+ save is pretty stout...and you could have a ghorgon for the monster, which is nearly as impressive as a necrosphinx...and then a pimped bray shaman or malagor...try to make him transform into a mountain chimera for TWO monsters...
Tomb kings could be good...I guess depending on the more specific rules...are special characters allowed? Are mounts allowed for the character? Are those mounts allowed to be monsters (back to karl franz with that one!) If the answer is yes to everything, you'd be hard pressed to beat a necrosphinx (one S10 HKB attack, and it flies, along with a nice statline) for the monster. And if you're going for characters, settra's (Um, S6/T5, 4W, 5A, 4+/4++, chariot, no armor save allowed, copious special rules) worth his full cost of 475 points, not that you're worried about points cost, or you could take at tomb king in a warsphinx (which bellyflops on troops, can generate over 30 hits with luck) for two monsters AND a good answer to anything the enemy brings as his regiment of 30...and tomb guard with killing blow halberd is nice, especially if you take settra (you can throw off a movement spell with healing for a side effect every turn, since he's also a L1 mage, and you should probably take the signature spell on him anyway), since they'll be WS7 if within 6" of him, and S5, T4 to start...
I'm having trouble finding an army that wouldn't make a good army for your fantasy challenge...everyone seems to have stout special characters, so you should probably look at nasty monsters (necrosphinx or ghorgon) or nasty troops (S5 or better, T4 or better, excellent armor is nice, killing blow is nice, undead is nice if you can heal them)

wouldnt work for bretonnians, at all, but anyway that was a bit of a troll comment, i feel like the warriors of chaos are your best option but are out classed in the monster section, it would be cool if you could use a chaos dragon as the monster, but you would have to figure out the rules, otherwise i am liking the sound of the tomb kings and beastmen, wouldn't scratch the daemons, but then again what does...
For Daemons of Chaos;
Bloodthirster w/Dark Insanity + Immortal Fury + Armour of Khorne or Obsidian Armour + Axe of Khorne + Fury.
Lv4 Keeper of Secrets w/Spirit Swallower is pretty nasty too! (every wound it causes heals a wound it's suffered)
Lv2 Tzeentch Herald w/Loremaster Life + Spellbreaker
30 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch.
You'll have a very nasty magic phase, plus the ability to really buff your troops with addtional toughness & healing.
Warriors of Chaos:
30 Chosen of Tzeentch w/Halberds & champ w/eye of the gods manipulating item
Warshrine of Tzeentch
Exalted Hero of Tzeentch w/Shield, BSB, Talisman of Preservation.
That's a unit that will have 2 rolls on the eye of gods table, and be able to add/subtract 1 from the roll. Plus a re-roll for all Ld tests & your hero has a 3+/3++ save... Should be able to munch through most things.
Interesting way to play a battle. Well what about the Woodelfs? With no point limit I say:
Character: Treeman Ancient
Infantry: Glade guard
Stomp and shoot all the way. Strangling roots makes it interesting. With Items you can use the spites like AON to kill of his character.
can the infantry be monstrous infantry, if so take a block of 30 minotaur as your block. A tooled up doombull, as for the monster not sure which one to pick. I never play monsters in a beastmen army.
Well i've checked up and it is basically any monster(including special characters) any hero (with or without mount) and any standard infantry. Apparently you can even pick across army books!
It's basically just meant to be a bit of fun and a way to play with a lot of big nastys they are very much relying on people being decent about it and not trying to go too over the top.
Thanks for the ideas guys.
Archaeon, Galruch and a block of chosen*.any monster(including special characters) any hero (with or without mount) and any standard infantry
*Warriors if by standard you mean core?
