Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm newly subscribed to the forum but have been reading quite a while and play whfb for about 1,5 yrs again.
Recently have been thinking around the following:
If the forces of order were to fight the forces of destruction in - say - a 3.000 point battle and you could pick from either all the order or destruction army lists, how would you build up your epic force? (Core / Special / Rare / Characters)?
I would think for the forces of destruction something like:
- Chaos Warrios
- DE Crossbowmen
- Blood crushers
- Hellpit abomination
Lord / Hero:
- Supreme sorceress
- Exalted hero
The forces of order however, i do not know that well, curious to your reactions.
For Destruction, from a purely competitive standpoint, all fluff right out the window, I'd field:
Chaos Warriors (you're an idiot not to- literally the best point-for-pound core in the game)
Dark Riders w/ Repeater crossbows - because they're among the best fast cav in the game, and they're devastating.
Reaper Bolt Throwers
SkullTaker on Juggy
Festus the Leechlord (for Poison unitwide)
For the forces of Order?
Saurus Warriors w/ Spears
Cannons (Dwarf or Empire)
Dragon Princes (best Cavalry available to Order)
Tree Kin (horded, devastating monstrous creatures for Order)
Dwarf Lord (General)
Arch Lector on a WAltar/Runesmith on an Anvil
Empire BSB (would pick Dwarf, but want access to Common banners/items)
Well, there you have it. That's the stuff I would be looking at to make my army lists. At just 3k, I think it wouldn't feel much different than a normal combat. I've played a lot of these combinations in the form of 9k+ megabattles, and I can say that you really get a feel for each unit's role in a combined force.
wow, whole lot of chaos and empire in there, doesnt seem to be a full composite list (but i think you are pretty spot on, i am just whining because as a bret player the dragon prince comment was very hurtful)
Well Orcs & Goblins don't seem to have their place either :-)
The mega battles that you describe sound pretty cool Captain Sarathai, hope to play such games myself ones, sounds like great fun and must look good when all the mini's are painted up!
A lot of the stuff that I put in those lists was from a competitive, points/pound standpoint. For example, Saurus Warriors are often math-hammered to be second only to Chaos Warriors in their effectiveness.
O&G are a good army, don't get me wrong, and they've even got some really nice units and options, but they definitely do best when they're fielded together as a whole, rather than as individual units. The idea did cross my mind to spam their cheap warmachines though...
The rest of it comes down to filling a role. Bret cavalry is very good, and I thought about swapping them out for the Dragon Princes. The problem though is that DPs -while more expensive- get more attacks and more hits for about 1.5 times the cost of a Bretonian. The Lance formation is great for ranks, but my list didn't need ranked up cavalry, or even flankers (Swordmasters baby), it needed shock cavalry that could deal with enemy flankers and light regiments. Dragon Princes with what amounts to basically 4A each, are the boys who fit the bill best.
Empire? Well, I could grab a lot of cheaper Bowmen shooting, but for less than double the points, I can get nearly double the effectiveness from the Handgunners. Blackpowder is something to be feared. If you want fast cavalry and you're in the Order, what are your choices? Mounted Yeomen are a joke, and even Brets know that- same with Ellyrian Reavers. That leaves us with Wood Elf fast cav, who would be amazing if they weren't a little over priced. So all that's left are Pistoliers with their Short-bow like range and Handgun like strength. Being 2x Multis with Quick To Fire doesn't hurt either. The Empire characters are there because they do their jobs without all the bells and whistles. You can pick up a captain for 20pts less than an Elf Noble, and sure, you lose ASF and some WS and Ini, but it's worth the trade in my opinion. All I need is someone to carry a flag, and Empire does it the cheapest. Likewise, the Dwarf General- I need high leadership, and nobody does that better than a Dwarf. Empire Wizards are nice and cheap, and Runepriesta and/or WarriorPriests both give extra dispel dice, but Warrior Priests are cheaper (IRC).
The big games are a lot easier to put together than you think. Get a few people together with 3k armies and go to town. That's all you need. Most recently we had 3 person teams with 2500pt lists and it worked perfectly. Follow all the rules for allied forces, and prepare for 'Storm of Magic'.
I completely agree with you from a tactical standpoint, it just seems that as the army that is supposed to BE the best cavalry army, we arent in any way (at least when compared to other far superior knights)
