I have been playing fantasy for about a year now and in that time I have Lizardmen and Dwarves, to very clinical and dominant armies in their own rights and i am starting to tire of them so looking to get an army that is fun and random, I was kinda thinking along the lines of Skaven or OnG but would like the communities opinion.
The army ideally:
- has average model count (not looking for mega elite like DoC/WoC)
- chalks alot up to chance / relies heavily on a single foundation (although i dont wana do Vamps, they were my first foray into fantasy and didnt get on well with the army)
- has an interesting minature range to test my painting
Ideas and opinions to the floor please
well you could do a themed army
1) a wood elf army using only trees (treeman ancient and drycha as lords, dryads as core, treekin as special and treemen as rare) which i think wld look very cool and also wont take months/years to paint
with dyrcha its very random and so can be devastating or a total flop
2) tomb kings
has lots of new and different miniatures, big units and has cool fluff
they rely heavily on magic so can be difficult to play with but can also be very fun
there main problem is that they have 2 builds, a chariot list with tomb guard or lots and lots of shooting with tomb guard
they are also very slow which is the main reason why they cant do a combat list
3) a goblin list
Goblin great shaman on a archnarok
Goblin big boss with the giant axe thing
Goblin bsb with the spider banner
lots of small units of night goblins with fanatics
a big unit of goblins with spears
Trolls and chariots
More arachnarok spiders, and a giant
you see where this is going, lots and lots of globins with a few monsters
If you like rolling lots of dice (which are random number generators, after all ), you'll love the Beastmen. Lots of attacks, Leadership tests for Hatred that happens every round, and it's a fast-moving, hard-hitting army. I'm also of the opinion that the miniatures look awesome.
I would completely recommend OGs. I've been playing and collecting for over a decade and I've not tired of them yet. Animosity will can turn each round towards something random and unexpected. The random craziness of night goblin fanatics, doom diver catapults, and just plain sneakiness never disappoints to entertain. The model range is diverse and full. You don't just buy OGs you end up feeling like your building a whole tribe. I hope you try them and enjoy.
I would also suggest an O&G army. Unfortunately, if you also want to win your games full of randomness, I'd have to change my suggestion over to the Beastmen or Skaven. 'Average Model Count' these days is pretty crazy, considering everyone's into 2500pt games. My Warriors list is rocking with 85 models, and it's the "super elite" category and smaller than most Daemon armies.
Wood Elves could be entertaining, but they're certainly not random, and they have a pretty tiny unit count. Played a game against them last night actually, faced off 3 Treemen (giant-sized), 6 Treekin (ogre sized), and then about 50 Elves. You want to avoid Dryads like the plague- they're among the worst units in the book. Which brings me to the next problem with starting Wood Elves - dice rolls are frustrating. They're a maneuverable army that you just don't want in combat. Your shooting is mediocre at best, and although the trees are scary, the rest of your army is made of damp tissue paper.
If excitment and randonism(is that a word?) is all you want, take skaven. The painting is like basecoating the model with filthy colours, add the wash, and if you want put some highlights, easy. The randomness comes from their fanatical suicidal style of playing, as almost all of their weapons, that are not like halberds, spears etc. are powered by nuclear energy. That ain't enough? then there's the ugliest creature that has ever slumbered this world, the infamous Hell Pit ABOMINATION. That has to be THE most random monster.
Ah, and then their even more suicidal magic, which has two different lores(2 signature lores???!!!) that are both the most funniest lores, one spell can turn enemies into clan rats, other give a breath weapon, etc. And they have assasins, ogre sized frenzied super rats, catapults, lightning cannons, the cheapest infantry in the game(gobbos maybe cheaper, gotta check), swarms, warrior mages, that can ride a huge furnace, that makes the plague monk unit unbreakable, even huger bell, that can destroy enemy's war machines, ad just everything fun!
man i don't play skavens, but i really wanna now
animosity rolls that make your own troops attack eachother, random movement units like pump wagons squighoppers, fanatics and manglers, sneaky backstabin goblins preteding to be dark elf assassins, Giants with random attacks that do the most damage when falling over (in a random direction i might add)
stupidity rolls on trolls!
poisoned mushroom rolls for night goblin shaman and trying to steal enemy's dispeldice to use against them.
Go for the Greenskin and you'll be in for enough randomness to cure you forever of any desire to be random ever again.
My vote: go for whatever army you think you like to paint/convert =D
