Welcome to Librarium Online!
I might be starting soon, and I am quite torn between those armies.
I like the concept of the "good" vampire count and somewhat Chaos too, but then I look at the shooting phase and see Empire Cannons and Hochland Long Rifles and the Cult's Warrior Priests. Then again, Lizardmen seem to be like Chaos - an elite close-combat force with good magic, but a little more shooting...
Some pros&cons of the armies (and how to close up the weaknesses) and feelings of their respective books, please. Or should I just succumb and add some Elves to Chaos for a shooty/melee army with brilliant magic? (Problem is, I don't that much like Dark Elves, but the army itself seems excellent: Fast but frail elves, sturdy and powerful Chaos troops, some kind of Daemonic elflord, Chaos&Elven magic and so on...)
EDIT: Damn, treat the Chaos entries as one (though you can vote Hordes for Mortals with Beasts/Daemons and Beasts for Beasts with Hordes content, I am not making a Daemonic army. If I start Chaos I'll buy both books...
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD
I'll try to give a description:
A army which can summon whole new units on the field, have got lots of unbreakable guys, who also cause fear.
They also have models who are ethereal, and so only can be hit by magic weapons.
Their lords are Really good characters(vampires)
The problem with them is, that you have to protect your general, cause if he dies, your army starts to die. They also don't like it, when they don't have any more characters on the field to make new units.
A quite all-around army, but has got some good shoting.
Fun detachment rule to get overhand in combat.
Only problem is, that they only excel at shooting, and don't have any real tough guys on foot, only knights.
A real good army, with good magic, close combat guys and good shooting with small little skinks, who have got poisoned blow pipes(2 shots!!.
They don't have any real weaknesses, but cost a bit more than a regular army.
Cult of Slaanesh.
I don't know this list very well, but they can get the magic and shooting of the Dark Elves, with the hard-hitting power and defense of Chaos.
They are really costy in points, so don't think you'll outnumber everybody.
Hordes of Chaos:
These guys have got the best close-combat tropps in the game.
Rock hard chaos warriors, chaos knights, and chpea warhounds and marauders to flank, or serve as cannon meat.
They also got good magic powers with tzeetch and slaanesh.
They can be given marks, which gives them cool things such as fear, frenzy, extra powerdice or immune to psycho.
If you don't choose any of those, youre troops can re-roll failed break-tests.
If you give your general a specific mark, your army may only use that mark.
If you give him none, you're other troops may each get the mark you want em to have.
The big weakness is point-cost.If you use lots of marauders, you can go with a horde, but basic chaos warriors cost 15 points!!If you want em to be killers, you can count some more points with that!!Also no shooting
Beasts of chaos.
Same marking system as Hordes of chaos, but got much cheaper troops.
They also excel at close combat, but aren't as great as their counterparts.
Problem is that they don't have any shooting, and can be shot mostly very fast.
You can slso combine the chaos lists, by using the core troops of one of them as special for the other, and special as rare units.

Cult of Slaanesh. Combination of elves and mortal chaos. very very nasty indeed, especially in the magic phase (I learnt the hard way...) I dont have an army of them, but I definately want one!
...And I shall be there, waiting, at the gates of hell, you shall not escape my wrath!
Empire They are good in any situation
Wat dus dis button do?
People advising you on what army is good won't really help you in your choice. IMO you should go to a GW and ask about them, read the book and maybe proxy a game or two to get the feel for the army. Then make your choice.
Oh and as these threads aren't really adding much, I'm gonna have to lock it.
