I am new to fantasy but have played 40k.(space marines and Tyranids). From my experiences in that field I now want a popular army. I loved space marines but everyone played them. I'm looking for an army in fantasy that is uncommon. It would be great if you could list the armies that you don't see to often. I have my eye on wood elves, are they popular in particular.
p.s. I've usd the search function and couldn't find anything.
Thanks for any help in advance
hmmm, it depends really on your style of play, as there are magic, shooting and combat heavy armies and there are a few that are in between, for there is roughly a type of army for everyone as they are all unique just like 40k (i'm thinking of starting that ).
the most unpopular army that i've never seen or been against are the chaos dwarfs, and the skaven in that matter, the CD i find are rather beardy as they have 'rocket launchers' and 'shotgun' type weapons, confusing really:s
good luck on finding a force that suits you...
You shouldn't really pick an army that you are getting just because its "Uncommon"... trust me, you'll probably regret it. If you have an eye out for wood elves, get them! Not everyone will have wood elves, just like with space marines.
As for the most "Uncommon" armies found... I'd have to say Chaos Dwarves, and Tomb Kings.
I play beasts of chaos, and though I have seen hordes of Regular chaos playes, haven't seen a whole lot of beasts. But really, rather than go for an uncommo army, just go with one you like the looks or fluff of. Thats Why I play beats, I mean, come on goats of death everywhere, how can I not be pumped.

If you want uncommon then Chaos Dwarves is the way to go but consider the drawbacks. They don't have a army book and can be refused from tournies. Also GW doesn't sell the models anymore so you have to collect it of ebay and such. Would be expensive.
Another uncommon one is High elves and they are uncommon because the are persived to be weak. Which is not true but they rely heavely on magic and therefor your lists will often be picked on if you manage to make it competitive and be prepared to be called cheesy if you win games.
I wouldn't consider skaven uncommon. Dogs of war are pretty uncommon but also very tough to play since they a no magic items of their own. I wouldn't worry too much on how common an army is. Pick one that appeals to you. But I think right now Dwarves are pretty common. Also when an army gets "redone" by GW there usually is a big boost of players for that army. Next is the Orcs and Goblins. Then Empire I think and Dark Elves will be up soon too since they don't have an amry box yet. Unfortunately it's the High Elves that need it the most. Maybe I just think that because I play high elves but if you start playing them make sure you can deal with a lot of punishment.
yea, if you start with HE and are new to Warhammer, expect a lot of defeat, i have manegd only recenlty to get the best of my army and i sufferd repeaded major losses and massacres.
DON'T LET IT GET YOU DOWN!
it takes time to learn how to play with an army.
So take your time and have fun!
Wood elves are slowly sinking away, they should have the best shooting but just can't rival with Dwarves or Skaven. Against those armies wood elves will just die.Originally Posted by Magic69
Don't get Chaos Dwarves either unless you love converting! There aren't really any 'common' armies as in everyone has them.
Wood Elves just won't die agains't Dwarves or Skaven, not when played properly. I've seen some young players out there, and they 90% of the time have cheese out Dwarf armies, with tons of cannons and thunderers. Some armies are just more difficult to use, like HE... they are more hard to play than with my typical empire army, and if I win with them, it feels more rewarding to win with HE.Originally Posted by Cairocopter
However, since Elric101 is new to Fantasy... he should have more trouble if he picks WE. But whatever he has an eye out for should be good enough.
Well, I've heard that Wood Elves just can't do close combat so when faced with armies that outclass them at shooting how are they supposed to win? You're right though that HE are hard to master, as they're pretty reliant on certain factors such as magic.Originally Posted by Magic69
i dont think any of the WHFB armies are so common in the way SMs are in 40k. Dwarfs have just been redone so expect a lot of dwarf armies at the moment. Others i see a lot of are Empire, Brettonian, VC and wood elves (which are similarly fairly new)
With this in mind id just recommend you have a look at all of them and see what you like the look of/like the fluff for.
