so far i have around 750 to 1000 pts
I would appricate advice on equipment specially and on characters importance in this game is it necessary to have big characters in a game? <25% on characters
i am a 40k player first but am inteseted in elfs. this explains my love of small character big troops.
Lvl 1 Mage
Lvl 1 Mage
15 swordsmasters (lov' 'em)
Repeater bolt thrower
I also have a hero on dragon in work but thats for a much bigger game/display.
what would you recommend as expansion? Silver helm or eagles perhaps?
I was wondering, do you have the Codex or Army Book for high elves? because if you do I'd suggest to make a 1000 point army and post it, with all the points. I think it is not neccesary to have good fighting units as characters, but it is important to really boost your mages, because they are the only peole in your army who can do the magic casting. On your mages I would suggest making them level 2, and giving them channeller and seer.
right this is my thoughts
Mage Lvl 1
sword of might, Silver wand
Blade Lord, Standard Bearer, Lion Standard
Repeater Bolt Thrower
this is 63 models for 1000pts which is statisfying for a ex-marine player
most deffintaly silver helms, heavy calvalry woo!

right i have a game verus a chaos army comming up and i know he will be using little or no magic and loves 5 chaos knights and a chariot comb. i was wondering how you think this list might fare against him?
lvl 1 mage
talisman of saphery, silver wand, pure of heart
12 spear elves, standard
12 spear elves, standard
12 swordmasters, including leader with blessed tome, standard with war banner, and a muscisian
1 repeater bolt thrower
i intend to put the mage in the swordmasters, using the wbw and talisam so he can safely issue a challange and repell the knights, and if i can get a shooting spell also to help out i will.
If you are going against chaos i would suggest upping your mage to lv. 2 amd taking lore of heavens. if you can geet uranons thunder bolt of a couple of times than chances are any chaos knights are gone. Forked lightning is also very good for taking out wizards. some people call it "hiding behind your pansy mages" I prefer to call it "tactical advantage" but whatever.
interesting i was thinking bout armour penertrating spells not a bad idea.
Never give your mage a magical weapon, the last place he should be is in combat.
I doubt 1 S4 WS 4 attack will change the combat to your favour. Take an extra swordmaster instead of sword of might.
Archers are not likely to do much against Chaos warriors or knights.
With 20 Archers Shooting (if you can actually find space for them all to line up) You might kill a warrior. They will be in combat at about turn 3 (some sooner) and you will have killed 3 men, that is about 45 points from your 280.
Cut them down to 10 if you are fighting marauder horsemen or if it is an all warrior/knight army then dont bother at all and take 5 Dragon Princes, make your mage lvl 2 and add some spearmen.
Remember swordmasters are essential against WS5 T4 core. (hit and wound on 3's)
the idea of the talisam and btw is to makethe knights leaders weapon basic which he is then invunerable to i think it is a nice combo.
lvl 2 mage is tempting but expensive.
i have three main characters lined up for my army an apprentice wizird lvl1-2, a master lvl 4, and a auxilary hero on a dragon who will help from time to time. basically thats why not a lvl 2 mage yet i plan to make a story from the army on a quest to recover artifacts from orkich and chaos lands.
are the archers really going to have that hard a time killing knights?
which would be better the single bolt or mutli bolt of the rbt to kill knights?
BS4 but at long range, S3
I think 2.8% chance of a kill
6 Bolt thrower shots have a 75% chance of killing a knight at long range
a single shot has a 41% chance of a killing knight at long range
I had nothing else to do.......
In my army i to have 1RBT and 12 Archers and no magic (my opponents dont use much either) - not normal for a high elf army but i already have a Tzeentch army so im trying something different
When using magic go for no magic (maybe a scroll caddy) or total magic superiority, mid amounts will achieve very little (unless just for a support roll)
If you do want to go shooty take an eagle to block marches, he cant stop it with out going into combat (and it can flee)
Dont count on a single spell (WBW) to hold off enemies it might work, or it might not
