What I want is this to take on Skaven, so I've got war machines that are best use vs large blocks of infantry, a few missile units to help there as well. Then the basic idea is to probably use either the bear trap or the Enduring Mountain tactic, with the Longbeards as the ancor.
The Larger GW armed warriors will be on their flank and other smaller one will be on the flank of the HW armed warriors, their main job will be to flank charge units that engage their brother unit or to block charges.
The lord has been armed so he can deal more damage with more attacks and he should be able to survive most enemie characters in a challenge. He'll be leading the Longbeards and the thane will be in the other units, but is as yet undecided which. The runesmith will either go in a unit or stay near the back with the war machines.
So any suggestions on what would be better vs Skaven would be helpful, also I would like any feed back from Skaven players to see what they think. Cheers to you all.
Not bad nto bad at all.
Why do you have such a small unit of thunderers though?
Why not take some miners and rangers and do like a guantlet straterdgey.
Put the rangers on one side then pop up on the other side with miners forcing the skaven to tackle the longbeards.
I'm not big a fan of Rangers and miners can be a bit unpredictable, also I would prefer to know where all my units are. But miners might work, also do you think my anti-magic is good enough or would another Runesmith be worth it?
As for the Thunderers I've only chosen 10 because it allows me room for other units and it's not that expensive either. I much rather have a unit that can hold itself in combat, than a missile unit. Also what do you think to swapping the runes on the Longbeards standard for the Rune of Slowness? Give the rats a bit of a surprise?
Listen-hear, short-thing. I should not-not be here, the decay-lords will probably have me eaten-killed for telling you this, but tell-tell, I shall.
You are on the true-right track with your choices of war-engines. Straight line shots like cannon are of little use against us. Take more-more stone-lobbers if you are good-good at guessing ranges, more bolt-tossers if you are not.
Check-check my 2000 point list in this forum-place. Think-think about ways to deal with all of the units. In a fair-fight, your troops have the advantage, but us-we do not fight fair when we can avoid it.
Slow-Rune is very nasty to us-us. We are used to having a long-long charge range.
Also, you may-may want another runesmith-thing in your force. My 2k list has a casting pool of 6, which overmatches even your dwarf-dispels. That is prior-before I get into bound items... If I changed the list the way some would suggest(i.e. adding a grey seer in place of the warlord+cheiftan), my casting pool would jump to 10(not to mention the warpstone tokens).
Dwarf T is the bane of the Skaven since we get so few S4 units, and even fewer S5 units(Rat Ogres... that's it.) On the other hand, we have a great number of things that do horrible things to Dwarfs at range. You'll need a way to deal with them, otherwise a smart-smart skaven player will load up on things like Jezzails. S6, armor-piercing. I expect even short-things will be shot-shot to pieces by them. Poison Wind Globadiers, with their special rules will cause you grief as well, unless you have a good way to deal with them. If your opponent is especially good at eyeballing ranges, they can stay just out of charge range and lob their balls of death at you. Plague Censer Bearers will cause you less grief than they would say, elf-things, but they will hurt you on the charge, and badly. Toughness tests all around, though short-thing T will mitigate this some-some. Then hits with flails.
All-in-all, not a bad-bad list for defeating us-us. I would be hard-pressed to really out-deploy you with my 2k list. Because you're fighting rat-rats, you can get away with more, smaller units than you could against, say, Chaos. Skaven-skavens will have a hard enough time damaging you with your toughness, that you don't need as many ranks to come off victorious.
Like the skaven said maybe another runesmith would be good, but I would think about taking the rangers if the battlefield has a forest that way you have protected shooting unit able to be the break water of the enemy forces meaning you have more control on the battle and cause of the rangers pop up rule you also get an added trick up your sleave for the skaven.
Good luck none the less and kick some serious skaven Butt!
For our clans we fight,
for our hold we fight,
for our lives we fight,
but all this would be in vain if you do not fight with honour.
So do not be rash like elves but wear down the enemy and strike them hard,
and you will win the day.
And don't forget to post us a nice battle report man.
Yes, we havent seen a battlereport for ages!
I was considering adding another Runesmith with MR of Balance and a Rune Of Spellbreaking, this should help with the anti-magic ablities. But the case would then be what to drop?
I was actually considering giving the Longbeards the Rune Of Slowness, just to see what it can do. But I think the Rune Of Battle to add to the CR will do quite nicely, and the Rune Of Sanctuary to help stop those spells. But I was considering changing the Thane to BSB with MR Of Fear and Rune Of Battle, it's cheap compared with the other Runes I can add and it should all me to get the first hits in (I won't auto break them, but they will be hitting on 6s).
And I was considering a gyrocopter, it would be useful to fly up and steam the Jezzails, stop march moves and maybe roast a few rats from behind. But I do like the Flame Cannon, it'll cover lots and should kill most, also it can cause panic tests.
I enjoy the idea of the gyrocopter since it gives you a trick up your sleave against a skaven army( who would of thought it huh? ).
The extra runes are up to you, but I reckon either give the longbeards the rune of battle and the rune of sanctuary since their save is not wonderful and the rune of battle increase your chance to lap around the skaven or beat the unit then overrun into the rest of the army and killing it outright (dice willing of course. ) or stick with the rune of slowness since being able to charge with longbeards will absoloutely devastate any skaven unit if you know what I mean.
Good luck and burn, shoot and kick skaven butt man!
