Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was just wondering how long you guys had your first army before u decided to get another.
Welcome to LO, Paperbag.
I started playing VC in Nov of 2004. When GW issued the Wood Elves, I bought the army book while I was recovering from ACL surgery on my knee. I sat on the futon with a cutting board, my sprue cutters, a tube of plastic cement, and a paring knife. I'd sort the model parts onto a small towel and trim away the mold lines with the paring knife.
That was early July of 2005, so I guess I lasted nine months. The problem is that I have two unpainted boxes of grave guard, and because school was so busy last year, I have lots of Wood Elves left to paint, despite having busted my tail this summer (I finished two treemen, six treekin, 8 dryads, three characters, and am still working on the warhawks).
Making matters worse, I started buying boxes for an ogre kingdoms skragg army a while back. Most of the boxes sit on the shelves, unassembled. And with Skull Pass arriving, I'm swapping my night goblins for someone's dwarfs. I plan on not touching the dwarfs until the ogres are finished, but I've also pledged not to touch the ogres until the wood elves are done.
Now consider that I have nearly 50 WE models left: 7 wild riders and noble, 8 glade guard, 16 archers, 18 or so eternal guard. Also, there's a spellsinger and a spellweaver left, not to mention Orion.
I really went overboard and kind of regret it, because I know I won't finish all those any time soon.
So what's your current army, how long have you been playing, and what armies are you thinking about collecting?
Honetly I just started collecting WE, and I want to get them painted, but I also really like the miniatures in other armies as well (skaven for example). So I was just wondering how long peope tended to stick with one army. I Figured once I had a solid force(maybe around 2500 pts?), and actually won some games I would be ok, but I thought I would see how some other people deal with the wanting of new models.
I used to be like DaveVC .... I had no control over any of my purchases.
My first army is still only half done -> Vampire Counts (i could probably field 1.5k pts, but it wouldn't be very competitive)
Then, since we were playing skirmish/warbands, it was easy to collect armies, so I bought a little bit of Hordes of Chaos, empire, high elves and dark elves. This was about 6 years ago. I also (through buying starter sets or buying parts of other's starter sets) had a bit of Lizardmen, Bretonnians, and Orcs.
I fell in love with Chaos and built up a medium competitive Hordes of Chaos army. Then I bought a whole empire army at once and acquired some more spearmen/artillery. It took me years to finish painting the empire army.
Then ... probably 2 years ago.... I entered a contest and the next day won a raffle. I ended up getting an entire bretonnian army. This army is finally assembled and primed, but only a handful of knights are painted.
Then, slightly after my bretonnian purchase, I picked up a whole beasts of chaos army at an auction for a steal. These bad boys are all painted right now and are my current favourite army to game with against my friends. (My empire are too good and I don't want to keep slaughtering them) I find with my current beast army and my current gaming group, its a perfect blend of goodness, fun and army potency. Plus it looks so cool.
About 4 days ago, I bought the new plastic giant and currently am in the process of sculpting up a second one.
I'm much better than most people in terms of leaving behind unpainted models. I'd say only 15-20% of my models are unpainted. Including an entire Bretonnian army. I have some models from almost every range.
My advice to you: Wait until your army is fully painted and up to 2k pts or whatever your gaming group normally plays at (whichever is lower) and then look into a second army.
I started 40k about 10 years ago, then about 6 years ago I went to WHFB and never looked back. But I have so many random models, try to go with a range and stick with it until you have a coherent force.
Thanks Kihriban that really set things straight for me, and wow thats a lot of models you have there. I figure I will get around 2250 points fully painted before I start collecting another army.
I would say go a bit over the point limit your group normaly plays, so if you normaly play 2000 point games, go with 2500, or even 3000. this way your not fielding the same army all the time and you can mix it up, this way you won't get to bored with the army.
I started playing VC in 2002 or something like that, and just recently about a a year ago I started collecting lizardmen, so I waited about 3 years before changing it up, although I had some 40k stuff in the middle. I'm not a fast painter so it takes me a long time to get an army up and running so it's ussually a long wait between armies, not so much for 40k but I like to take my time with fantasy since I like my armies to look good.
No worries paperbag.
Busta has an excellent point too. You want to collect just a little over the value so you can have some leeway in selecting troops. No matter how good you are, you aren't going to be able to select the perfect army off the bat, and you aren't going to want to take the same force each time.
Glad i could help.
