Ok well on sat I got the new WD (uk), and in there is an article on themed armies. This got me thinking and wondering, I've got Dwarfs (9000pts) and my new HE army (2500pts - about halfway through painting them) and I was wondering what I could do to make mine different. I'm thinking of a theme, I believe I have one for my HEs. Here's my fluff: The Citadel Of Dragons
It's mainly a normal HE army, but I will always attempt to have a unit of sea guard in there. Or I've named my characters (which in time I will come up with fluff for) and if one is in the army I will attempt to make sure his unit is in there. Now this is very basic and I will get better ideas etc, but I now want fluff and a theme for my dwarfs. I was thinking of this and I thought
"I wonder if hearing about other peoples themed armies might give me ideas?"
So lets here them. I want to know if you have a themed army, what it is, why have you done the army this way, what makes it different and if you have any fluff feel free to post it too.
So how do you theme your armies? Do you just write fluff and pick whatever from their list or do you write fluff and think "Well how can I justify having ---- in the army?" Or do you get an idea and limit yourself to certain units the write fluff?
So lets take a look...
Well, my Skaven army is themed, sort of.
They all have white fur, being albinos. Their leader is Shiny, their Chieftain, who after a fierce battle against the High Elves struck down a Silver Helm, and took his armour and shield. The shiney mithril armour he now wears has given him the name Shiny.
They are the ones normally never seen in the Skaven society, hiding as they normally are, waiting for the day when the Horned Rat would ask of them to wage war in his name. They do not fight for themselves. Shiny has these visions now and then. Visions in which he talks directly to the Horned Rat. Skiny explains that he gets orders from the Horned Rat and that they fight for him, not for themselves.
The entire army wear blue ribbons around their necks out of respect for those who have died in combat for the Horned Rat, and gone to the Neverending Hamsterwheel in the sky.
There we go =)
Well that sounds erm.... Interesting to say the least Is that all your fluff or are you going to expand on it?
Right anyone else?
I'm seriously considering making a Peasant Rebellion themed bretonnian army as soon as the Men at Arms and Bowmen boxed sets are released. It'll be a army consisting almost entirely of peasants, with only the mandatory unit of knights, all converted from mounted yeomen models. I'll make them look like they've (somehow) felled some knights and just glued random bits of their armor onto themselves. The characters too, will be converted Yeomen.
The idea is of course a peasant revolt, rebelling against their so-called "chivalric" oppressors. I don't expect the list to win much, but it'll be fun to make.
Wow, that sounds great. If you do it any chance of a pic or two? Also I got to say it sounds like a original idea, way to go
I've started a High Elf army that's about a group of Wood Elves that decided to return to Ulthuan.
It's mainly archers. And I mean, A LOT of archers. It uses the High Elf list, but the miniatures are converted to make them kinda' seem like they're still wood elves at heart.
And when the new WE book comes out? Prepare to meet my next army....
Oh, and I have a cult of Khaine. Sorceresses, an Assasin, Corsairs, and LOTS of Executioners.
If a tree falls in the forest, and it lands on a mime, does anyone care?
My new goblin army is themed around their leader, Tanka da fox'ead. He is the greates goblin tactical genius the old world has ever seen, His most trusted commanders and him spend weeks in preperation for battle, training their troops, scouting the terrain, and laying extremely complex battle plans that will assure victory no matter what. However, he is a goblin, and a small one at that. The only soldiers he has at his disposal are goblins and snotlings, so he spends most of the battle jumping up and down in rage as he watches his perfectly laid plans ruined by the imcompetence of his troops. No plan survives contact with the enemy.
The army, "da norf Khemri korps", consists mainly of common goblins, though there is a spattering of overly religious night goblins. Fox'ead is protected in battle by his retinue of hill goblins, the elite "Sturm goblins". He also relies heavily on his chariots and pump wagons, whom he calls his "panzahs". For fire support he fields a battery of spear chukkas, the dreaded "Flak Eigty-eif" pattern.
Fox'ead stands firm in his beliefs, he has a strong dislike for orks and serves mainly as a mercenary for arabian traders, empire colonies and other desperate souls in the badlands and north Khemri.
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel allright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace, and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.
Goblin kroozade of revengyness: win:19 draw:10 loss:9
I'm seriously concidering a wood elf army based on robinhood fluff.

My Dwarf army is gonna be a totally traditional theme, no war machines or Thunderers what-so-ever. However, since my Dwarf army fluff states that their hold is inside a volcano, they have a "Flame Cannon"...
It's gonna be a Flame Cannon-sized Dragon model. The fluff is that they found a baby mini-dragon in the volcano, but when it treated the Dwarfs like parents they couldn't bear to kill it. So they incorporated it into their battle lines
Also some of my Dwarfs will have a "magma" effect on their bases, using thick globs of PVA then painting it orange and the like.
Yes.. I will translate my favourite Japanese movies and paint the japanese letter somewhere on the warriors (shields, backs). If i run out of movies i'll take Anime
Black Guard backs, for example: http://gallery.librarium-online.com/fantasybattle/adr
