Welcome to Librarium Online!
I don't normally like apologising before even stating anything, but I figure it's the most polite way to have people deal with another 'help me select my army' threads. Anyway, I thank any who do help out in this thread.
As seems to be fairly common, I am a 40k veteran, as are most of my gaming group. We are branching out into Fantasy in about a month or so. One player will be playing Beastmen of Chaos, another Orcs and Goblins. The third is undecided still, but leaning towards Hordes of Chaos.
Now in 40k, I play the Thousand Sons, Tzeentch warriors of death! As much as I owe to my god, I was hoping to play something different to chaos this time around (Especially seeing we might have 2 chaos players). So far, whilst reading information about Fantasy, I have come to the conclusion that I like the idea of playing one of the following armies: Lizardmen, Skaven, Bretonnians, Vampire Counts or Dark Elves.
Now in terms of medieval/fantasy settings, a few things I have always been a very big fan of are : Cavalry (I LOVE Cavalry!!!), vampires, assassins, 'primitive' or 'savage' races. I'm not a huge fan of magic, but I'm not entirely against it either.
So far, I love the cavalry aspect of the bretonnians. I like the vampire counts, because they're vampires, c'mon! Not too fond of skeletons and zombies, but oh well... Lizardmen sound quite nice as well, with the whole aztec/savage feel to them. Skaven look awesome, and the rat ogres, rattling guns and assassins are all units that look fantastic to field. Dark elves are also great for their assassins and overall fluff I suppose.
I'm not entirely sure which I should go... If anyone knows of any information that would help sway me... or possibly provide insight as to why I should choose a particular race, please, do tell.
Once more, I thank you for any assistance.
Go the WarHammer Website and click just starting out. Click your way and at the bottem of the second or third page is a nice thing with info on all the armies. Read through the armies you are interested in to get a feel on tactics and what not.
I know how you feel for I went through it not too long ago. Do not rush into anything, make sure you choose an army fit for you. In another game I spent like 5 months chooseing an army.
I wish you luck and I hope you find the Army ideal for you!
Brets have the best cavalry in the game. Hands down, period, end of story. Their lance formation allows 3 wide ranks instead of 5 and the flanks in all ranks to attack. They are a monster on the charge. Also, the peasents are cheap blocks of troops that can hold things up for awhile to set up a flank charge by you knights. Their weaknesses are that their magic is lacking, the only good lore they can take is heavens, and only a Lord lvl wizard can take it. Also Bretonnians are very one dimensional. They accel at charging into units and trying to force them to break. Tactically there isn't much variety.
That being said Bretonnians were my first army in Fantasy. I played them for about 6 months, had alot of success with them and then got bored with them tactically. Overall they are a strong army, but if you like varied tactics I would recommend another army.
One of the armies I thought about switching to after Bretonnians. Vampire Counts boast some of the strongest lords in the game. They have a lot of different bloodlines that range from all around to powerful casters to monsterious melee characters. They have good magic. All your undead units will cause fear. Your rank and file skeles and zombies won't kill too much in CC though. Mainly you will use them to hold units up and slam into the flank of your enemy with some of your stronger untis. Some downsides to VC are that if your General is killed in combat, your army will literally start to crumble around you. Also, almost all of the Vampire Count models are metal (no battalion box), making this army expensive to collect. Overall a strong army however.
This is the army I'm currently starting to collect. Lizardmen are likely the most balanced army in Fantasy. The saurus are one of the best rank and file troop in the game. And skinks with their poison blowguns are great. Lizards have good cavalry, their fliers have the ability to perform hit and run attacks on units and they have a giant, terror causing stegadon with a bolt thrower on his back! What more could you want? The Lizardmen characters are rock solid as well. Scar vet and Oldbloods can be close combat monsters, rivaling vampires and chaos with the right gear. The hero level wizards, Skink Priests have to take the best lore in the game, heavens. And the lord level wizard, the Slann-Mage is strongest caster in the game. He can choose up to a possible 6 spells and he can mix and match from every lore in the game. He isn't limited to choosing only 1. Overall, Lizardmen are very versitile, and you can talior a list to play however you like for the most part.
I don't know too much about skaven or dark elves, I haven't played or looked into either army really. A good think to do for any army your interested in though is to go to their section of the forum here and browse through them. You will find alot of "New to ____________" posts which will list alot of information that could potentially be helpful to you.
Good luck with your army choice. If you have any questions about either Bretonnia or Lizardmen, feel free to PM me if you'd like. I'd be happy to answer anything I can.
