ive been playing dwarves and bret for a while now and i want to try something new.
im looking for an army which has really expensive models (points wise) and come in core regiments of 16 (not really in to ogres) this way i might be able to get a 500-1000 pts army quickly.
Perhaps try looking into the Hordes of Chaos range. Chaos warriors cost pretty much an arm or a leg. I mean, they're 254 points for 16 models including a full command. Without any shields, extra weapons or anything. And not to forget they can take a Mark of chaos which boosts up your army in ability and points, heh.
They do however not sell at 16 a box, but 12 a box. But GW sells boxes of 3 snapfit warriors (which are pretty expensive relatively though)
Not to forget they have Chaos knights which are 165 for 5 models. Not exactly a 16 model core regiment, but pretty much likewise an expensive core unit.
I don't know that much of the other armies, but I collect Chaos, so hence I can tell you about Chaos. I do collect dwarves too, but that's not really that expensive basically.
Hordes of Chaos.
Nothing more then that to say...
15 warriors; shields and command =255pts
chariot of chaos; Mark of Tzeentch =140pts
5 Knights; champion =185pts
Exalted champion of chaos; Blade of Blood, enchanted shield =145pts
Exalted champion of Tzeentch; Spell familiar =185pts.
These are core units and heroes listed (please note that these are not suggestions to setups, they are just examples). I would not use the last hero, or the knights with this setup, but I had to give them something to conceal there individual point costs (so GW wont kill me).
I would suggest buying warriors (altough there are only 12 in a pack) maybe even 2 packs and a hero. thats an insta army, or if you want it really fast: 1 hero, 5 knights and a chariot, then make them all Tzeentch and you have an army around 600pts.

chaos sounds like a good army to me. but how long have you actually played dwarfs now?
maybe its more fun to play it a little bit longer, cause its much more fun when you have one big army instead of 3 small armies.
For core troops, not much is going to be more expensive than Brets. Chaos is up there as well and so are Ogres, but you didn't want to do Ogres.
If you want something different, I'd go with a more magical oriented army, which neither Dwarves nor Brets are. Some armies I might suggest looking into are Lizardmen, High Elves, or Tomb Kings.
Lizardmen have saurus which are rock solid stat-wise and a unit of 20 will cost you 240 points. High Elves have Silver Helms which are core.
Why the interest in 16 model units? 4x4 ranks have been outdated since 7th edition started...
