I am very new to WF with some experience in 40k, I am looking to put together a small 500point war band, (which later could be extended but won’t happen for at least a year or more.)
I have decided upon the Warriors of Chaos as they look to have the best looking models and from I know in 40k are hard as nails.
So, I am looking for advice on putting together a war band.
From what I understand I can if I choose select a chaos god to base my army around, I am not over fussed by this option and would like to request benefits form each one if at all possible – all I know is that slannesh is magic, khrone is Close Combat I think,
Assuming I need a hero (captain?)
General Hero / Champion
Chaos warriors on horses seem like a god hard fast attacking option?
Mauderers? I really can’t see why people play these other than there cheap and you can play lots of them, however like I previously said in new to this so if I am wrong please tell me.
Other than that I am not sure where to go, any and all advice and options would be extremely appreciated.
W1 / L1 / D1
2 min units of Marauder horsemen with flails musician and MoS
1 Chaos sorcerer on a barded steed
1 min knight unit no upgrades or MoK or maybe even standard bearer if u can afford it.
The list is mean, the list is an excellent point to start out with WoC and the list isn't expensive. Every chaos army can use marauder horsemen, every chaos list can use 5 regular knights. This list would set you back $90 when the codex first came out, but nowdays knights are frightfully expensive, having gone up from like $22 to I Just Recently Got Them For $36. You can get marauder horsemen for $24 per nowadays. If would like to get 2 boxes of knights you can convert one into an ambiguous exalted hero/Chaos Sorcerer.
Our HQ options for a tiny warband come in two varieties, 1-exalted heros(melee maniacs) and 2-sorcerers (surprisingly survivable casters with the same statline as a regular knight. A kitted out Sorcerer can beat other factions' melee specialists. Mine survived 2 rounds against a dark elf assasin.
I am going to have to call complete shenanigans outside of the de not actually equiping anything on the assassin or he managed to be completely unlucky and roll nothing but 1s.A kitted out Sorcerer can beat other factions' melee specialists. Mine survived 2 rounds against a dark elf assasin.
He was in a unit with fleshy abundance and he had a 5+ ward save. Actually, if you get past the first round of combat, dark elves really don't hit that hard, their whole army leans on hatred like nothing else. They really need that hatred. I suffered a wound too though. His dark elf had the ability that made him always 1 strength over the toughness of a model, no KB. He aslo had a ward save on his assasin. I would have gotten a wound in too if it wasnt for that wardsave. The whole total save for my sorcerer was...4+ armor save, 5+ ward save and 4+ regen save. The spearmen broke and I ran them down, funny, funny story.
As for the warband:
Khorne = major melee but due to frenzy your units will be a little harder to control
Nurgle = survivability
Slaanesh = fear and leadership based
Tzeentch = is the magic heavy
Khorne & Nurgle marks are pretty expensive and will take up a lot of your points at 500 so I wouldnt recommend marking up everything. Slaanesh is situational in that a lot of the more popular armies you might see are fearless/unbreakable and Tzeentch is better off in higher point games.
I would recommend going undivided at this point without marking up your units but choose a mark for your hero. Also, an exalted hero choice would be much better than a sorceror since all armies will have a base of 2 dispel dice and you wont get many spells off with just 1 caster. You'd be better off getting a CC monster and gearing to either hit really hard to annihilate anything in 1 turn, or for survival. Knights would be too expensive now. Get a few units of marauder horsemen and a large unit of marauders on foot to accompany the hero. A battallion and 2 units of horsemen will run you less than $200 but you'll have enough to do 1000 point games later on with a few hero models. For now, you could use one of the knight or warrior models as your hero since you'll unlikely be able to fit them in at 500 points and both options come with a lot of different weapon choices you can play around with
