I mostly play Dark Elves (thus the flaming attacks banner), High elves, Lizardmen and Skaven. Thank you for any thoughts. Comments and constructive criticism.
No magic defence is going to give the Dark Elves, Lizards and Skaven a free for all. If the Dark Elves decide to take Lore of metal you're going to have a hell of a job stopping him annihilating units. Life Magic (lizards) is also horrendous with it's buffs. Toughness 8 Saurus??
Not saying no magic means you loose. I'd just be prepared for a rough ride against those magic heavy armies. Adding a few items that protect you from magic missiles etc will help out. Collar of Khorne for example on your general or other Magic resistance items in combination with the Mark of Tzeentch should see the worst of the hits away.
Well, Borak pretty much sums it up. I'd consider ditching the combat lord for a sorcerer lord to save you from the worst of your opponents magic and chuck some back in their heads. I found lore of shadows to be good, as not only will you debuff their units, but as they are remains in play spells, you hamper their magic as well as they have to decide if they wanna let that spell remain or use their pd to dispel it. Tzeentch is also pretty decent with a +5 to cast and you can take 3rd eye just for giggles if you want
Aye that’s true. Usually an Exalted can do what a Lord can do. There isn’t much difference in stat line and an Exalteds stat line is usually better than most Lords anyway. If you dropped the Lord to a hero you’d have enough points left over to grab a sorcerer who will add some magic defence and give you some ability as well.
A good build for a sorcerer (if you don’t want a Lord) is Level 2, Tzeentch, 3rd eye and the infernal puppet/skull of Katam.
The puppet means you’re less likely to explode while increasing the chances that your enemy wizards head explodes (a good way to stop them casting. While the Katam combo gives your level 2 a total of +4 to cast spells. That’s Lord level casting on a Hero. Add in the fact that he steals their spells and you’ve got yourself a bargain. He does come in at 195/210pts though, which isn’t cheap.
*blinks* just realized you don't actually have a bsb :o You really need one of those in 8th, those rerolls can be the difference between victory or defeat. Fluffing your breaktest and then not having a reroll is bad, as is failing a fear/terror test. You can already reroll panic of course, but still, most in your army is ld8 at best if the general is more than 12" away, and if you're switching lord, you'll be ld 8 (or 9, if you grab a standard of discipline and stick your sorcerer lord in there). Bear in mind that you'll most likely want to build him to be survivable (he's still an exalted hero, plenty killy in his own right, so a MoT and some sort of wardsave would do the trick).
I've never really used a BSB. Maybe lucky that I had one or two lost combats where I failed the break test and got over ran but it happened to my death star lord+knights units on my last game. Never had I rolled so many ones in my life. Ha ha.
So what's a good BSB banner? I played around with the doom totem before, with lore of death doom and darkness and hellcannon blasting away. It was great in theory but never actually tried it. How does that sound?
Battle Standard Bearers had a huge boost in 8th Edition. Not only do you get to re-roll break tests you get to re-roll leadership tests! That goes for panic (not so important for us) Fear, Terror, tests for being able to march and even stupidity.
There are alot of bonuses to the BSB now that wern't there before!! Although it's not a necessity. I run a list without one.
Well, frankly, I wouldn't bother with a magic banner on him, I mostly try to keep him alive with a decent armour/wardsave, so a MoT is usually what I put on him.
If I run knights, I often use a Pinkus Special:
Barded Chaos steed
Talisman of preservation
So that's a 2+save, 3+ wardsave and 4 str 6 attacks (5 str 6 if with a group with banner of rage). You got 5 points left for perhaps a charmed shield to avoid the first hit on 2+, but won't help your save in combat, so might be better on the tzeentch sorcerer on disc (if you include him of course) or perhaps an iron curse icon. Just be mindful of those pesky lore of metal spells ( do be in mind your opponent has to choose his magic lore when making his list)
ticks in at 210 pts, with 25pts to spend on chaos gifts if you really must (soporific musk can be fun, but hardly necessary). Chuck him in with a group of Nurgle knights with banner of rage and watch them go
