Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi, I'll shortly be playing a mate's Dark Elf list, and would appreciate some advice. He's more experienced in the game than me, I've only played three games since returning to the hobby after a long absence.
So far I've managed to beat VC, Skaven and High Elves, the latter of which was very close as I was nearly wiped out by enemy magic. Here's the last list I took:
Sorcerer: MoT, Collar of Khorne, Charmed Shield, Spell Familiar, Level 2.
12 Warriors: Halberds, Std & musician, Banner of Rage, MoT
34 Marauders: Great Weapons, Std & Musician.
5 Knights: Khorne
5 Warhounds
The list was largely the result of advice from Lord Borak. It feels pretty well balanced, but quite vulnerable to magic. Lore of Metal destroyed my knights and quite a few marauders in the last game. But then Scylla managed to kill his Lord in a challenge (huge points gain there), and Hounds somehow managed to kill both crew on his repeater blot thrower and it turned my way from there.
Anyway, against the Dark Elves I know I'll be facing either a Hydra or a unit of cold one knights. I guess I'll also be facing a fair amount of shooting, and no doubt more magic. If I can get into CC relatively intact I should be fine, but that feels like a big if. Would appreciate some criticism of the list, and perhaps some advice as to how to better protect myself against magic and shooting.
Also, I'd love to find space for a Hellcannon, but at this points level I can't see it...
I would throw in an exalted BSB, and drop the knights since they are half your points allotment for only five models. You definitely also need to throw in the banner of eternal flame on your halberd warriors to take care of the inevitable hydra. Honestly, I would also drop sylla and the hounds since there are not that many units at 1000 pts anyways so you dont need as many redirects and deployment drops. I would use the points to beef up the warrior unit and fill in with another unit of marauders with GWs since you will go after the DEs I5 anyways.
Unless I'm reading the rules wrong (very possible), I can't have an exalted BSB AND a lvl 2 sorcerer at this points level. So to fit a BSB in I've either got to drop magic completely, or upgrade my sorcerer to a Lord, which imo is waaay too much of an investment with only 1k points to play with, and not worth it just to fit in a BSB.
You're probably right about the Knights and Scylla, although both units have been brilliant so far.
You are right since the limit is 250. What I usually do at this point level is combine them. I take an exalted, give him the book of secrets, a dispel, scroll (not always necessary but nice) and then the third eye and usually make him a shadow mage. This way you have magical protection from the scroll, miasma, and the ability to steal one of their nasty useful spells plus a more combat oriented character. He is a little bit vulnerable but maybe drop the scroll and give him the book, enchanted shield, biting blade, and third eye and you have a 2+ as and -3 modifier.
Thanks for the advice. I like the idea of combining the BSB and sorcerer, it's the most efficient way to get both. It also makes him an even tastier target for my opponent though. Here's my analysis:
I get a BSB
My general is slightly better in CC (which I mostly want to keep him away from)
I get access to my opponent's spells
He's an even better target as BSB, sole Sorcerer and General
He's a worse sorcerer (lvl 1 as opposed to 2)
He's more vulnerable (since half his his item points allocation will go on the book, I can't give him both the charmed shield and collar)
He only gets D6+1 on the miscast table, again increasing vulnerability
On the whole I think I'll go for it, since a BSB would really have helped out in my last battle, but I worry about how easy I'm making it to kill my general, BSB and sorcerer. Any sniping capability or war machine is going to give me a hard time.
On that note, I'm reluctant to remove my knights, Scylla and Hounds, since that'll make my entire army move at infantry pace. I'll at least keep the hounds for war machine disruption, but will probably save points at least on the knights. I'm tempted to try the War Shrine again, it can protect a flank and potentially provide a decent bonus.
What about getting a small unit of trolls? That way you can drop the knights, and use those points left over to buff up the warrior unit. I like the BSB, just make sure to throw a minimal amount of dice at spell so that you don't blow up Just wanted to point out that if your BSB has MoT he will get +1 to cast making him as good as a lvl 2 when casting spells. I would keep the warhounds, for 30 points they can do a lot, but maybe consider dropping Scylla.
The BSB can't be your general, just saying. I would probably go for an exalted with book and eye anyway though.
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
Yum I love trolls. Especially with Throgg, but he's not going to make it in here...
Anyway, this is what I've come up with:
General: Exalted Hero, MoT, Collar of Khorne, Book of Secrets, 3rd Eye, Shield - 200 pts
Warriors x 18: Halberds, Banner of Rage, MoT, FC - 373 pts (General goes in here, hence champ)
Marauders x 34: Great Weapons, MoK, Std + Muso - 212 pts
Trolls x 3: 135 pts
Hounds: 30 pts
That leaves me with 50 points left over, probably best spent on another troll (or maybe shields for the warriors). I've got two scary blocks of infantry, but my general looks quite vulnerable and I still think my magic phase is weak. But if I can get those infantry blocks into cc with anything approaching those starting numbers, they're going to chew through opponents in short order.
I guess it'd be up to the trolls to deal with the Hydra. Mind you, either infantry block could do it, it'd just get stomped first.
Having written an anti-chaos Dark Elf tactica I feel obliged to betray my kin (again and comment on this list from a Dark Elf's point of view).
In smaller games I am prone to taking Sorceresses with Dark Magic and acess to 4 spells, apart from that I would probably actually steer away from a Hydra, having taken a Supreme Sorceress and instead invest in a unit of Excecutioners or Black Guard (Black Guard usually in my case), then I would fill my necessary core units with Frenzied Corsairs and a unit of Repeater Crossbows.
As of such I wouldn't be particularly worried by any units in your list save the Trolls (no Hydra means no fire...) however was I using one then I would gladly ram it into the Trolls, fairly certain of its ability to take them out.
Apart from that I would face my Black Guard off agianst your Warriors, fairly confident that they could at least cripple them and will certainly hold their ground to the last man, fortunatley you have a champion to stop my Str 6 Tower Master from damaging your hero too badly (he probably won't kill him but is more likley than not to take a wound off)....
Magic-wise I would seek to either soften up your trolls or deal with the annoying issue of the marauders with a Soul Stealer/Black Horror, with Power of Darkness a Supreme Sorceress is very difficult to stop in 1K points, however the latter threat is fairly well dealt with by the crossbows and corsairs (even if I'll loose a unit in the process).
All in all I suggest that you consider increasing your defences slightly. A decent Dark Elf player will waste no time in targeting weak units and removing the support for your stronger ones before picking them off in turn. I've come to actually enjoy the challenge of playing WoC as they are a difficult match-up for us yet one that requires both players to be incredibly careful to prevent a massacre.

Well with 50 points you could invest in another troll as you said, or perhaps buff up the marauders to a 40 man unit and give your warrior unit shields, of course it's completely up to you!
