I havent played Warhammer since the 90's
I still had a few models lying around so got the new rules and army list and thought Id see what I could make using legel units
The army I came up with is:
Aspiring Champion of Chaos Talisman of Protection, Biting Blade, Enchanted Shield
11 chaos warriors +shield +Great Weapon
Standard w. War banner
10 chaos warriors +shield
Mark of Nurgle
I have 6 Maurader models, would you go build up that unit or go down a different route to expand this army
I do also have a sorcerer and maybe a few knights (5) I could build
Using the new army book and replacing your Aspiring Champion of Chaos with an Exalted Hero, your army list is 610 points.
When you're playing at such a low points level, while it is possible to use a full plate army, you'll get significantly more mileage out of Marauders and Marauder Horsemen.
If you're determined to go all-plate and focus on Warriors, then you need to rework some of your numbers.
Specific comments on your army follow in blue:
If you have that many warriors, throw some gear on them and your champ and you've got at least a 750pt army, with your other guys maybe even 1,000. I think you'll have more fun if you put some bells and whistles on your guys making them uber elite. Initiative is huge in 8th ed. don't waste your warriors initiative with great weapons. Go for halberds and shields imo with mark of Khorne.
If you get 1 box of 12 warriors you could go 2 units 5x3 warriors with all the trimmings, a sorc and a lord that's easily a 1,000pt army. If you throw in another hero/sorc and a couple dogs or a small marauder unit you're at 1,500 before you know it.

Welcome to the Forum and back to Fantasy then dude. El_Don has said most of what needs to be said but there are still a few things I can ramble on about.
The new rule set (we're in 8th at the mo) uses a percentage system on how to build an army. Rather than the Organisation chart in the army book. You no longer have to have 2 Core to make a 500pt list. You just need to have 25% in core for it to be legal. However, the max you can spend in heroes is 25% and your Aspiring Champ is way over than I think. Infact the Exalted can have dick all equipment as his base cost is so high. He can have a shield and the Mark of Tzeentch and that's it. Here are the percentages we now use.
Max Lords: 25%
Max Heroes: 25%
Min Core: 25%
Max Special: 50%
Max Rare: 25%
Thanks for the advice, I got this army list off the games workshop website, the models were slightly cheaper than the original army list I found
One of the armies I will be fighting is High Elves who strike first so would great swords still be a bad idea for this?
Yes these are metal marauders with flails, and some of my warriors are identical boxed set with axes, the others were plastic kits you glued together
Dont know how to tell which list I have but my general total cost is 100
Aye thats the HoC book. The aspiring champ was 80pts basic I think.
Against High Elves you're striking last no matter what so Great weapons are ok then, but I still wouldn't take them. Sword and shield are great against Elves as you can weather the storm of their attacks and pound the back once they've finished doing nothing. If High Elves aren't the only thing you'll ever face then ditch great weapons for halberds.......... they're just better. If your friends have the new books then I would strongly advise getting the new Chaos Book.
The old metal marauders rock. I've got a unit of them and love 'em. I've got a few (20ish) of the old Plastic warriors but they're pretty bum. Good for mutants though.
