Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm getting into fantasy now (40k Dark Angels player), and I'm really intrigued by tzeentch magic, so I have my codex in hand, but got a bit overwhelmed.
I'm not trying to make a uber-competitive list, just a fun escalating set of lists so I can buy models in increments and enjoy myself in the meanwhile.
So, the question here is, going from 500pt, to 750pt, 1000pt what are the main units I need to be looking at to make a fun/playable list? Warriors, chosen, knights? I know I can't use my lord yet until we get to 2000pts, so which level 2 caster is a better point investment?
I appreciate the input.
Second questions for tzeentch players...do you use the tzeentch lore exclusively, or do you branch out into the other allowed lores with support casters?
Warriors and Knights are a definite must-have, and form the core of any mortal Chaos army. Whether you make them Chosen or not is just a matter of whether you have the points. Chariots are also very useful for Tzeentch lists, as they are the most cost effective method of adding Power Dice to your pool, and still do great damage on a charge.
You'll want some horrors as you're not technically allowed to use the abilities that spawn them without the models (ie the spell that makes everyone take a S2 hit, they still take the hit just the casualties would not become horrors), and their bound spells are a great way to soak up dispel dice anyway.
The Exhalted Champ is worth the extra 20 points if you can squeeze him in as General. The extra attack is always useful and normal infantry will only hit him on 5's (usually) whereas they can usually hit the Aspiring Champ on 4's. Pretty big change in survivability.
All the Tzeentch players I've seen have used Sorcerers as well as their Tzeentch-marked characters, usually taking the Lore of Fire. Shadow is good too.
Hope that helps.
Ignoring the specifics for a moment, you want to dominate the magic phase.
Sorry, I meant DOMINATE.
You must have complete magical control. Anything else is a losing battle. Tzeentch is an army of extremes. Play to it. More power dice, more dispel dice, more magic users. If you aren't on that bandwagon then pick another God.
thank you, that does help a whole lot.
I understand that the army is all about the magic phase, and i'm really looking forward to it.
A good general for a tzeentch army when you hit 2000 points is the exalted sorcerer on a barded steed.
Considerably cheaper than the lord of tzeentch allowing more units of tzeentch for those extra power dice.
Also, the other lores add some diversity to your force.
P.S. Don't be daunted when you find yourself outnumbered 5 to 1....it happens to all us tzeentch players,
