why wouldn't it work? For once you might not be outnumbered, you have hard hitting wizards and characters. Chariots hit hard, you have good war machine hunters (furies) and then you can screen or bait (marauder horsmen with spears and throwing axes are nasty) and you could throw in some minotaurs with great weapons for can openers. The reg. marauders are so cheap, you could have 3-4 large units for combat res.
Everything depends on your army composition and how you play, but there is no reason that you couldn't storm the board with this army.
I believe any great start to a chaos army is 3 units of 10 marauders with flails, add a unit or two of horsemen, a few unit of hounds, and top it off with a daemon prince.... mmm tasty
I have used a marauders army. And it does help out with the advantage of having a lot of numbers. For once I was up there with the numbers against an orc army with lots of gobos. My army had two 20 man units with flails, two 10 man units with shield and weapon and a unit of beastmen for the skirmish part with the idea of screening. 2 sorcerers and a general, only 100 points played. I lost needless to say but my general fled after a unit was killed and then didn't rally which caused him to turn into a spawn (gaze of the gods). Things would have been different if he would have stayed but the fickle powers of chaos was not with me. It was fun to play. A marauder army is what I like cause of the models, just a lot of flesh painting so my army is still under construction with the painting.
I shall call him Squishy, and he shall be mine, and he shall be my Squishy.
I'd field three units of marauders 5x5 with light armour, shields and full command, plus heroes (maybe tzeentch to combine combat strength and some defensive magic) to provide the casualties.
I'd definetly take a BsB with the banner of the gods, maybe placed behind the 1st line in a small unit, or in a unit of marauder horsemen.
About the riders, i'd field 4 units of 7 horsemen with flails and musician.
Then take some beasts chariots, to stay low with the points cost.
It's better, it's shiny, it's warped...it's Chaos.
I for one can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work, and there are several ways to build a fairly solid list out of marauders. When people think of chaos, they often think of small numbers of elite troops, so this approach may take your opponents by surprise, giving you an instant advantage. I personally make a mix of small numbers of elite and large numbers of cheap, swarmy units. In my 10,000 pt Slaanesh army I have 12 units of 15 daemonettes, for a total of 180 daemonettes. That usually makes my opponent worry. Especially as it's a Mortal army.
