Alright, so I'm taking a 1250 pt. Chaos army (the list is in the army lists section) up against a VERY beardy 1250 pt. Dwarven Slayer Army in this little friendly tourney we've got going on between a bunch of my friends.
I really just need some advice on how I should approach fighting him. I watched him TEAR through an Ogre Kingdoms army, and they're very similar (save for the impact hits and low I). This got me VERY worried. I can post some more info on the armies that we're both bringing if needed, but I was generally just looking for some general tactics I could use to thwart him and make his beardies die very very painfully.
I know he's bringing 3 doomseekers, the goblin hewer, long drong's pirates, and 2 full units of slayers...with some runes that negate missle fire with a 5+ ward save or some such BS.
Any help at all would be GREATLY appreciated. The Blood God needs his skulls!
Gah.. Slayer armies are pure evil. Ill advise using Khorne, with them being unbreakable and having no armour then you really need to max out on attacks. Dont worry about Frenzy, you want the charge, are faster then them, and they are too slow to out up a decent bait.
So, with that done, you need a General. Slayers Characters are a tad.. broken, so dont waste too many pts here. Just an Exalted with AoDamnation maybe, and a Sword of Might.
Dont bother with banners, al you need are kills. Music possibly, incase you are made to flee, and a Champ in each unit.
12 Chosen MoK Warriors, and 5 Chosen MoK Knights.
Then some Spawns maybe for your own Unbreakable, or maybe a Giant, 2D6 auto wounds can be nice. Forget about Chariots. Possibly marauder Cav for their throwing axes, but dont bother with the infantry, its just killable static res.
So yea, fill up on Knights, then round out with Warriors
Unfortunately, this is kind of an "all-comers" tourney that we're doing, so the guys in my list are the guys in my list vs. everyone I'm playing.
I see what you're saying about everything, though. I know I'm going to need tons of attacks to make sure that he only gets his characters to fight back, and I know I'm going to need to charge to guarantee that he never gets to strike first. What do you think about challenges?
I'm thinking multicharges will probably be my best bet, and a lot of how the game ends up going will depend on deployment on both sides....if I get some lucky rolls with Chaos Spawn movement, that could really help out as well, but I'm not counting on it. I think my chariot is going to be relegated to support in this game....but we'll see...
Also, what do you think about doing for the doomseekers? For the last game I watched him play, he basically made them "screen" units...do i just try to use a spawn to kill them, or at least keep them tangled up for a while? Or should I have my general go hunting?
Thanks again, I would really appreciate anyone else's thoughts on this as well!
Take Chosen Knights of Khorne. They're perfectly legit for take-all-comers.
For the Doomseekers, perhaps a good magic missile (yes yes, I know they have MR1), or even a Chariot or two, The chances of the Doomseeker actually killing the thing are quite small and the S5 Impact Hits should squish the little midget with a poor hairstyle.
But I'll go out on a limb and assume these are the SoC lists. Does your opponent know that they're illegal now? From what I hear, GW are phasing out the armies, and whenever an army gets a new book out, their conferring list is illegalised.
Doomseekers are like Fanatics yea? Only they can fight.. Maybe try some Maru cav + Throwing Axes. to wound them before they get to you.
Points denial is a greta way to beat Slayers - he will only be able to shuffle towards you slowly - maybe a Hellcannon and marauder horsemen, and then just annihilate each unit piecemeal, once you have created a few gaps around his army...
Thanks again, guys.
As I stated in my first post, my army list is posted up in the army lists section if you'd like to look at it. I feel pretty confident about it now...I don't know why I didn't think about using the chariot in the first place to neutralize the doomseekers...they can soak up the auto-hit easily, and plow through him with the impact hits.
Phoenix--The Doomseekers are kinda like fanatics. They are independent units, but instead of 2d6 hits or whatever the goblin fanatics do, they do 1 automatic hit at S5 for every unit in base contact, and they hit on a 4+ roll for each unit touching that. AS are allowed as normal, and yes, they do have MR1.
I think i'll be alright now...thanks again for the help, it's really appreciated. Yes, we knew the list was "illegal" since the Storms of Chaos books are out-of-date, but we honestly didn't look at it and told the player it would be okay for him to play it before we realized just how overpowered (and beardy) it was. The rest of us are using normal, 7th ed. lists...I think what's worse is that he's using current dwarven book point costs for a lot of his stuff, which makes them significantly cheaper...Lesson learned. Now I gotta beat him.
