Welcome to Librarium Online!
I know, I know: there's a 'Fluff' forum. But this question is specifically about Warriors of Chaos, so if I post in 'Fluff', I run the risk of someone saying "there's a 'Warriors of Chaos' forum!"
Besides, we all know that WoC players are much cooler, more intelligent, and can offer better suggestions than the effeminate Elves, the dull Dwarves or those goofy Goblins, right? (Flattery gets you everywhere...!)
Anyhoo, if you want this moved to 'Fluff', I shall move it. Meantime, here's the question:
I'm creating some very basic fluff for a Warriors of Chaos army. I'm starting out with a 1,000 point army comprised entirely of Marauders and Marauder Horsemen, all in units of 24 and 12 respectively. This keeps everything in line with the Chaos Undivided special number of '12'. My army will fight several battles in my local GW against a variety of people and will gradually come to include some Warriors. Eventually, I'll start including Knights, then Chosen and then Spawns. Throughout, I'll dot the army with beasts, who kind of stumble across the wandering band of warriors from the wastelands (ooh, muchly alliterated!): I'll start with Warhounds and build up to Trolls, Ogres and Dragon Ogres. My army will be heading towards being devoted to Khorne and so my units remain the same - as Khorne's number is '8', units of 24 are still useable. Those units of 12 are still fine, so long as I have two of them to total 24 models. Etc.
Now, here's the rub: while I'm happy to write all my own background fluff before asking for feedback, I thought I'd open to the floor the question of what my units should be called. I really don't even know where to begin looking for ideas, as I'm very new to WHFB and even more new to Chaos. I was thinking about looking up some old Norse legends, as I believe that the mortal followers of the Chaos Gods tend to be based at least loosely on the idea of the old Norsemen from our real world. Failing that, I have no idea.
Does anyone have any suggestions for unit names? I'm looking - initially - for four units of Marauders and two units of Marauder Horsemen. Themes and fluffy names in particular would be greatly appreciated. There's also a hero in that army, so if you have any particularly good suggestions as to what he might be called, that would be awesome. Again, I have little idea where to even start thinking about these things. Plus I'm utterly exhausted, so my brain doesn't work properly.
In the new book there is a marauder charecter called wulfric the wanderer (animal in challenges, comes on like miners) so you could have a unit called something like 'the wanderers' or the 'wandering folk'. Thats all I can think of right now.
IMO, screw GW fluff. I write my own fluff. make Khorne's magic number be 9 if you want. Do what you want.
I play Warriors of Chaos because they are like Pre-Christian Europeans, they are a bunch of Vikings/Barbarians. I have an interest in that. So I will/do be drawing from Norse mythology.
Wulfric comes from Wotan the Wanderer.
IMO I wouldn't even draw from Norse history. Do what you want. I wouldn't limit yourself into trying to make some correct fluff back story. Just make your own. You might like the Chaos models, but don't let that make you think you have to give your army Barbarian like fluff. Then again, it may be hard to avoid it. Only let your imagination go wild!
I. Hate. Computers.
I had a big response all written out when I accidentally clicked away from the page. Nagivated back and everything's gone. A quick summary:
Thanks for the thoughts. I don't want to use Wulfric's background at the moment in case I use the character in the future. And I want to stick with the Norse feel because I think that for cultural and socio-historical reasons it feels much more right than using elements of Oriental, Africa or South American mythology, say.
Finally, I've chosen my model for my hero: I'm using the Valten, Champion of Sigmar model with a few very simple bits of conversion, like removing the twin-tailed comet from his chest. My Chaos hero is currently a Marauder and shouldn't look all decked out in Chaos Armour.
So, yeah. Oh - and I've picked a name for the hero, too. I'm calling him Aglaeca, which is the name of a character from Beowulf and means "demon, monster, or fiend" and "hero or warrior"; the Old English Dictionary definition: "wretch, miscreant, monster, demon, fierce enemy, fierce combatant, miserable being". After a little while I'll add the name Cearbhall, which means "hacker". I'll use it as an honourific given to him by his men... or his enemies.
Glad to get it sorted in my head. Now just have to name those units!
Don't worry, with a bit of pride and paitence you can make a great army, you just need to put a lot of effort into it. If you make an army log I will happily help out with ideas and C&C.
An army log is where you make a thread and keep updating it with pics as your army progresses, C&C means comments and critisisms (I think, it's always changing, at least in my mind).
Ah-hah. Sounds dandy. Only problem at the moment is that I don't have any models. I've ordered my Valten model and I'm waiting on my local GW to get a supply of Marauders in. Expecting both on Thursday. But it sounds like a good idea.
Do I do this on this forum, or would I be expected to set up my army log elsewhere? How does that work?
Also, thanks for the offer, now that I know what it means!
