I've recently been given a friend of mine's Chaos Warrior army. He has decided befor he has the book in hand that they are no longer a competative army so I traded my unfinished space orks for his Warriors of Chaos. My question is should I spend money and order a hellcannon or a chaos warshrine.
The hellcannon i rember from the Storm of Chaos book did 2 things for me 1. the model looks great and would be a blast to paint. 2. Loved to play against it because it was a point sink and usualy by turn 3 i would laugh as it killed his mages or ate the crew.
I know that there have been some changes to the way it works but from what i can tell is that it's still a stone thrower, so odds are even with some good range guessing it will scatter, that is over 200 points and dosn't use a large blast or have any way to re-direct its self like a gobo doom diver or such. For me the warshrine just seems like the better and more stable choice all around but I was wondering what some of the people who have had a chance to look at both the actual WoC book and have tried out the hellcannon think.
I should say that i want to use my warriors of chaos in a tournament setting so I am looking for a competative and balanced list.
Why not use both? I recently built a list at 2250 and was able to use both in it.
While the Warshrine is arguably the "Must have" unit in the Rare slot, whatever your next one is really is up to you.
But if you HAD to choose one or the other, yeah, the Warshrine wins due to it's ability to support the army rather well for it's point cost.
I do like the Hellcannon much better now, cheaper and takes only one rare slot. You don't have to worry about it making it's points back as much anymore, and the added shooting is a very welcome addition to the main army book.
Also, to my knowledge, they haven't produced a model for the warshrine, I would love it if someone posted a pic proving me wrong. So yeah, I believe you'll have to convert that. It is probably a much better more reliable choice. The hellcannon, however, may be much more fun.
I'd say you should ignore both and get a unit of Mengir's Manflayers, but I'd only be saying that to draw attention to the fact that no-one replied to my thread asking about said nasty dark elves.
If, however, you're going to choose one of the Hellcannon or the Warshrine, I reckon it has to be the latter. It has got some absurd combat stats and can boost your army wonderfully - if it's well-placed you can use it to do groovy combat-stuff and simultaneously support another unit in a seperate combat. Handy ability to have.
It's also something that justifies its point-cost even more as game sizes get bigger - the boost to stats costs nothing additional whether you're boosting a unit of 6 or a unit of 30. The bigger the game, the more worthy the Warshrine is of the points cost.
stop the manflayer talk (you would be hanged for treson in madmans world...).
i would go warshrine as im makeing one right now...
im also going for spawn as my second rare -but thats anouther story-.
the warshrine makes unit champions get eye of the gods rember so you have a terror causeing unit champion... (i love terror cant get enuff of it...)
im going to drop my charriots (who are only 10pts les than a warshrine) for my shrine leaving me points for horcemen. the shrine just makes the warriors that more fun to play with that uncirtainty of whatyou wil get will make them a breath of fresh air in my view!

If someone helps you REP them...
Yeah, the randomness of them is quite fun. I'm taking a very close look at the Shaggoth as a rare choice for my larger army. What are the numbers of rare units allowed in games? Below 2,000 is it only one rare choice? And then two from 2,000 - 2,999? Eeech. I'll have to think very carefully. I do think that the Warshrine is the must have, from what I know of it. And, in the long term I'll have a bunch of spawns to represent the continuing development of my characters. But I really, really like the Shaggoths! Meh. I'll see how it all pans out.
