... uh, somewhere....
It's currently just after four-thirty in the morning. I'm so tired my face is numb. I'm seeing two of several of the things sitting on my desk, though my sleep-deprived brain tells me there shouldn't be quite so many of 'em.
My back and neck are aching from being hunched over and my fingers are scraped raw.
My wallet is £XX lighter.
Sitting in front of me is my absolute first unit of Chaos troops. I just completed building 24 Marauders, complete with a damnably sexy triumverate of champion, standard bearer and musician. Over 3/4 of the heads are converted at least a little and the command have a small selection of exciting weaponry to augment their cool poses and 'I'm-going-to-kill' you vibes.
It took me over 12 hours. How is that even possible? And, when I say I've finished building them, I've yet to paint up shields to stick on their backs. And I haven't sanded the bases. And I'm planning on clipping the chain-and-ball part of their flails off to replace them with axes, so they're armed with great weapons instead of flails. But apart from that, I've finished building them.
Only another three units to build, before I get to do my 24 Marauder Horsemen. Oh, and the hero. *Sobs*. Does it get any easier? Or faster, at least? Please, God....
*Crumbles into restless sleep, dreaming of horny Marauder heads*
Need to chill man, build in increments. No need to sleep deprive yourself. And no it doesn't get easier.
Set yourself some realistic goals, like perhaps finishing a unit per week. That way you have clear objectives and a time frame and the ability to be as lavish as you want and really make units for an army you can be proud of.
I rushed my warhammer army of lizardmen and with hindsight I would go back and take my time to make a good looking army to compliment how much fun gaming is. This time my chaos army will be slowly put together with some customisation and personalisation of the good looking chaos stuff.
Thanks for the feedback, guys. I am taking enough time with the unit to make it my own - little simple conversions, like playing around with the heads of the models. And I really enjoyed getting the stuff finished. I was just horribly aware with each piece of model that I cut from the sprue, I still have another 23 of them to go. I think that scraping the flash was the most time-consuming part, and even then I didn't do as spectacular job as I might have done.
I've been told by others to aim for a unit per week, so I'll try and get this one painted to a fairly simple standard over the weekend and then pick up another unit at the start of next week. I just wanted to share with others that I had a unit for my fledging Chaos army - my first ever WHFB unit and my first GW unit since I played 40K around fifteen years ago. Exciting!
Exciting times then with such fantastic chaos models, I have been slowly putting together some warriors and they are my favourite models of any plastic footsloggers so far. They rank perfectly and look awesome together.
I also cant wait for the new marauders and knights. Ive seen the kits and they are sublime.
It depends on the method of painting them; I'm not even a superb painter myself (more like moderate/passable).
Simple models aren't a problem to paint really, it's just the details that you have to find a way around somehow.I rushed with the paint job on my Lizardmen too when I first got into Warhammer (mainly for the Battle of da Bosses campaign).I rushed my warhammer army of lizardmen and with hindsight I would go back and take my time to make a good looking army to compliment how much fun gaming is. It really is something to look back at your painting skills back then and realise how far you've come along in terms of paint jobs and gaming knowledge. And as for me, I too am giving my armies a re-paint whenever I get the time to do so (currently occupied with my own WoC army, which doesn't even have hounds or horsemen yet, but I'm working on it....slowly).
Well, I thought I'd share with people who might care: I just finished painting my unit of Marauders. While I realise that 'finished' isn't really in a gamer's vocabulary, they're done for now until I'm happy that I've built a reasonable army. Then I'll come back and have another look at them. Actually, that's not quite true - I haven't yet decided how to base them, so that's still to be done. But it'll take a matter of minutes. Not worried about that.
Sadly, I can't provide photos today, as I'm lacking camera-access. I'll aim to get some up tomorrow, though. I'd really appreciate feedback.
From purchase to completion was a few hours over eight days, making time for work and having a life. I'm quite happy with that - especially for my first ever unit! I guess it'll get a bit faster. If I can push out one unit a week, I'll be delighted. Next unit will be another Marauder unit, so I'll see if I can apply lessons learned and make it a bit faster!
Anyhoo, yeah. That's it. I'm delighted!!
