Curious what everyone thinks is the optimum mount for a Chaos Lord - pros and cons to each:
2. Daemonic Mount
3. Chaos Steed
4. Monstrous Creatures (Lumping in Dragons, Manticores, etc)
Just my thoughts. I'm no expert, but no-one else would chip in.
Am perfectly willing to enter into a good argument though.
1) Juggernought - Powerful and good protection in terms of armour save. You will have to take Mark of Khorne with all it's attendant Pro's and con's.
1a) Disk of Tzeentch - Flies. Best mobility of the god's daemon steeds. Flaming attacks
1b) Steed of Slaaneesh - It's got boobies! Fast and has a decent attack.
1c) Palanquin of nurgle - Real slow, really intended as an attack bonus for a footslogging lord who stays with his infantry. Really good at hitting stuff though.
2)Daemonic mount - Meh. Doesn't do anything for me.
3)Chaos Steed - Cheap. Does the job. Meant for movement not offence.
4)Dragons are great. Better for a sorcerer lord though. They do their best work marchblocking, causing Terror and killing through the medium of Halitosis.
Manticores are just budget dragons.
Gives the rider good protection, has good offensive ability (3 S5 attacks), gives the rider and the unit
MR(1), has a brilliant model, the only down side is that you have to have frenzy to take it.
2. Disk of tzeentch
Flight. Gives the rider the best moblity in the game for cheap, only downside is that the character cannot join units.
3. Steed of slaanesh
Second best mobilty in the game, cheap, can join units, has fast cav so you can shoot 360 degrees with things like bloodcurdling roar. Best used (IMO) in a unit of horsemen and charged out when needed for other things.
4. Palaquin of nurgle
I don't like this mount. It does not boost movement at all and costs a lot. It should be used on a character who might need extra fighting power in combat (sorcerer) if you can afford it, it can be used on a fighting character but IMO these characters should be on a fast moving mount so they can fight as soon as possible, and don't get shot to pieces. Can be used to get exta base size for things like blasphemous amulet and festering shroud, but not worth it to me.
5. Daemonic mount
Gives reasonable movement and fighting power, but other mounts seem more worth it to me.
6. Chaos steed
I like this mount. Cheap, fast, and gives good protection to the rider. I use this on cheap exalteds in knight units, sorceres for the armour save, and anywhere else if I need it or have the points. Only time it shouldn't be used is on a model with a great weapon or a model in a frenzied foot unit so he doesn't charge out.
Flight, terror, good fighter, large target. Terror can be very useful, and large target can be either a helping or a hindering. Seems to expensive and risky for a 2000 point game, so I would only use it in a 3000+ point game, where you can take another lord.
Cheap dragon. Gives killing blow which is nice but I would go big (dragon) or go home (nothing). Is quite easy to kill with shooting, especially poison, becuase of the lack of armour save.
Mmmm as I thought - difficult decisions.
I'm leaning more towards the Chaos Steed right now for my CC Lord, as it saves me some more points that a daemonic mount. I'm staying away from the MoK on my Lord as too many folks at my store know how to bait them.
Dragons are just too expensive in an already expensive army.
The Disc really seems to be a great option for one of my sorcerers to create havoc.
Don't have my codex in front of me - does the Chaos steed come with barding?
yeah, it has to come with barding!
I was toying around with the idea of keeping my lord on foot and sticking him with a warriors unit. I would have to spend extra on defense for him so it might not be worth it because I probably won't have enough to spend on a decent weapon. If he's not on foot I will stick him in a unit of knights but I'm afraid of getting shot to hell.
I have always liked the idea of the lord riding a giant monster. I ran a griffon count pretty effectively in my empire days. It would have to be a pretty small, elite army to fit a dragon in though(2000 pts)
Not really. I usually mount my lord on foot with helm of many eyes and a greatweapon in a unit of marauders. His job is pretty simple kill stuff before they can hurt my marauders. It is a pretty effective combination as they provide the combat resolution whilst he provides the kills.
I am also toyinfg with the idea of a Chaos Lord of Khorne on foot with two handweapons in a unit of khornate warriors.

Basically life sucks, there is only war and you're probably gonna get eaten by Tyranids, have fun.
Right, he mentioned that GW was one of the only reasons to use a non-mounted hero. I agree that a GW foot hero can work fairly decent to cut a swathe through some units, though that ability is reduced if they have a champ. It will still give you CR, but your marauders will be getting hit. All in all, I feel like mounted is the way to go, since you definitely want to be able to get this guy into combat.
