Welcome to Librarium Online!
Is this a nasty combo? Has people used Festus (obviously ya need to proxy) this way yet? He gives the unit poison and a weaker Reg. Let me know.
I really like that idea. Good way to keep him alive, and a cheap shield. I'll have to give it a shot but it sounds good on paper.
Black Templar (W/D/L): 4/6/2
Dark Eldar (W/D/L): 4/1/0
Warriors of Chaos (W/D/L): 3/0/1
Why not take a 40 man marauder unit with hand weapons, light armour and shields. Put in Festus and a Tzeentch BSB with the Blasted Standard?
4+ ward save, Regeneration. Decent leadership and rerolls.
String them out in front of your infantry advance so as to protect from unwanted missile fire. Laugh insanely as your opponent is forced to target your most resilient and expendable unit. When the time comes to enter combat, remove the BSB from the unit and pop him into another one. Then charge.
Can Festus be mounted?
no, he cannot.
Also consider using a hero in the unit with soporific musk, to give you a little extra chance of making that 1d6 pursuit move. Festus in the marauders definitely sounds like a great idea to me, probably better off giving them MoN for the -1 to hit rather than giving them the ward save vs shooting. I mean, even if they do get through the -1 to hit and the 5+ regen, they're just killing marauders, with a panic reroll. Make the unit big enough, and who cares if they kill 6 or 7 of them.
I can only imagine that marauders with poisoned attacks and a 5+ regeneration would be very, very nasty. The unit would benefit from being rather large, ie about 25+ models including festus. Eqquip them with handweapons, flails, shields, light armour and full command and you would have a very nasty unit that can take a lot of punishment as well as dish it out.
As for models there is an old chaos sorcerer with a really fat face that would be exelent as a festus conversion. Strap a few gubbins on his back and a suitable banner and hey presto its festus.
The new nurgle sorcerer w/ fat face should make a solid festus as well. I don't see much virtue in using the flails, I mean, it might get you a couple extra kills, but I think you are really going for staying power here. With a frontage of 5-6, you are looking at getting one of those attacks poisoned on average too. I mean, the flails may come up as useful from time to time, but is it worth dropping the extra points?
It is really down to personal preference. I alway choose this setup when fielding marauders simply because it is tactically flexible. I have the option of choosing to use flails or handweapons and shields. Admitedly I could take greatweapons as this would give me some better killing ability against heavily armoured opponants but I am just too lazy to do the conversion work to turn the flails in greatweapons.
Why Marauders when you can have Festus with a group of warriors w/f/c ehw and BoR and for cheese give them MoN. This unit even though weak with a 4str while having poison could even do well against a heavy monster or heavy unit. This also still gives you a 4+/5+ sv not to metion you get 20atks.
