Hand Weapon and Shield
Halberd and Shield
Halberd with no shield
Two Hand Weapons
How do you equip your warriors?
This is all about the weapons choices, but please also write if they're marked and/or Chosen.
I got to thinking how to maximize the damage output of a unit of warriors and in the same time maximize their armour AND minimize losses to missile fire.
The best defensive mark is the mark of Tzeentch when combined with the Blasted Standard, giving the unit a Ward Save of 4+. But this only works on one unit, so would I use this specific combo then it would be on something that I couldnt afford losing, like a giant unit of Chosen or a big unit of Knights. Also, I like uniformity n my armies.
So I figured that the Mark of Nurgle disrupts missile fire quite a bit, add to that their Chaos Armour and Shield and you got yourself a good staying power.
But how do you maximize their damage output? I just love Great Weapons and the whole idea of huge iron clad northmen swinging about with their two-handed axes just makes me smile. But is the Great Weapon that good when they always stikes last? Chaos Warriors have got an Initiative of 5. Isnt that something to take care of? So why not take Halberds? A Shield and an Halberd would really maximize damage output AND minimizing damage input, wouldn't it? I know the Shield is best IN combat and the halberd is a two handed weapon, but isn't the +1 to the armour save on the way in worth it?
Please give me your ideas how you use your warriors and WHY!

"The more choices you force the opponent to make, the better the chance for you to capitalize on his mistakes"
15 basic none chosen men with Halberd and shield for me, most likely not marked, slaanesh at most, at least as many units as you need minimum for core choices.
that high WS and initiative, couple with boosted strength and still decent save 3+ via shooting 4+ in close is kinda awesome I think.
if ONLY we could take spears, that would be awesome
How about great weapons / shields option?

If armed with shields and halberds, or great weapons, you do have the choice of which to use. So, what you do changes depending on whether you've charged or have been charged.
Armed with halberd and shield, say, if you receive a charge, you use your shields. Armour save pops to 2+ in combat, ensuring you have plenty of Warriors left to strike back, which helps you win combat, which means you strike first in the following round. If, however, you are charging, you have the halberd to try smashing through the unit in front of you.
The great weapon/halberd question seems to me to be kind of similar to the lances/ensorcelled weapons question for the Knights. Most people feel it's worth taking the ensorcelled weapons at the cost of 1S in order to protect the Knights in future rounds of combat, should it happen that they don't just smash through an enemy unit. For me, the same goes for halberds - I think great weapons are great if you do manage to break an ememy unit in the first round of combat, but I don't like losing out on the high Initiative and suffering from my lowered armour save in subsequent rounds. It seems to me that striking with halberds on the charge is still hard enough to destroy most things, but on the off-chance that the unit you've just smacked stands where it is - unbreakable units, anyone? - you're likely to still have first strike in the subsequent rounds of combat.

I like greatweapons and shields. The shields allow me to go defensive if I'm hit by a bad charge and the great weapons allow me to slaughter with imputy when I get the charge. Plus a 3+ save to shooting is nice.

I'd say Halberds and shields in all but one instance, and that is against High Elves. When their whole army has ASF, you may as well give all your warriors (and marauders) great weapons. That way you're pretty much guaranteed to make mincemeat of them with their low toughness.
So Sayeth Jimmy boy
I agree with Jimmy_boy on halberds and shields. I think warriors should always have shields for the +1 to save against shooting alone and then there's the option to go defensive in combat. With the other option I think halberds are best since S5 is normally enough to deal with most things especially if you have 2 attacks, I don't really like great weapons since Warriors have a good initiative so it would be a shame to waste it though great weapons would work against dwarfs. With additional hand weapons they are best used against armies with T3 and low armour saves which is quite a lot though for an all-comers list halberds are better since they can deal with a variety of troops better than additional hand weapons.
BEN DIESEL FTW!!!
In a tournament scenario most people will need a good balance of offence and defence. This means that Halberds and Shields is probably the best as this mean that you have a good 3+ save against shooting, a 4+ save in combat and S5 when you reach the enemy.
In addition a lot of people forget that they can still choose to declare that their warriors are using handweapons and shields instead of their halberds for the duration of any particular combat giving you more flexibility. This is especially usefull if you are about to get charged by knights or a monster.
With regards to marks there really are two in mind, the Mark of Slaanesh and the Mark of Nurgle.
Of the two I personally feel the Mark of Nurgle is the better option as it provides protection in both the shooting and combat phases so I feel that is the better choice. However if you find yourself going up against terror and fear causing enemies or are just straped for points then the Mark of Slaanesh gives you a little bit more protection against that failed fear/terror test.

Basically life sucks, there is only war and you're probably gonna get eaten by Tyranids, have fun.
How do you guys model your Halberds?
How are people modelling Great weapons also? While we are at it. Haha
