Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm starting a Warriors of Chaos army after deciding Vampire Counts aren't really for me (Damn weapon skill 2!) and I'm wondering if it's worth using a unit of Dragon Ogres or a Shaggoth in 2,000 or 2250 point games. I'm planning on taking a big block of Marauders, 15 Warriors with Halberds and Shields (Both Nurgle), two units of marauder horsemen (Slaanesh), two units of warhounds, a unit of 10 chosen with Great Weapons (Khorne), 5 Knights with lances (Nurgle and Frenzy Banner) and a Warshrine. Hero/Lords wise I don't intend on going higher than 600 points, but I'm not sure whether to go magic or combat.
So, my question is, would Dragon Ogres supplement anything particularly well in my army? Is there anything I might want to use them to replace? Also, general criticism of the list would be appreciated!
Dragon Ogres occupy the same spot as Knights - Fast, tough heavy hitters. Most people will say the Knights are better - they can take marks and standards, and their WS is slightly higher.
With that said, I like DOs more, and as such play them over Knights.
Dragon ogres can soak damage alot more than knights. You can crack open nearly anything with their high strength, and will take on well armoured foes with greater ease than knights.
Knights have more flexibility in regards to marks, magical banner and so forth. they mainly go after soft infantry to maximise that High WS and decent strength on attacks.
It comes down to how like like to play it, and what other units you field for maximum synergy.
So is it worth replacing Knights with them? Or I only use them in 2500+? Any advice on a Shaggoth?
In the end I would say it's up to you, if it was a 3000 or more I would think the shaggoth would shine more. A couple spawns and maybe a giant might suit your army better, Give you some speed.
As far as I know you can't hit your own units with spells, so the only way that will work is with Kholek. (Even then, only a Sorc Lord I think can take Lore of Heavens, so that's a pretty big game)
Something I didn't mention earlier - the biggest difference between DOs and Heavy Cav - Dos are Str 7 every turn, while cav if charged are 3 or 4 (5 if you're cool like Chaos). For receiving or a combat that lasts (Dwarves!) the DOs are far superior.
As far as the Shaggoth goes - I love him to death, I really do, I own two of them, but he really can't be justified in 2k games. One of the blessings of the new book is all of our Rare choices are very good. (Except the Hellcannon) In a 2k game I don't think I could go without a Warshrine or some spawn, and if I could I'd have to go giant. You may find differently, of course, but as is I feel he's just overcosted.
Trust in your core choices - love them, hate them, wish them dead to clear charges, but remember that come end they will pull off a miracle for you.
Hehe, Kolek is awesome. I tested him out in a hero battle and he annihilated Azhag The Slaughterer before going to fight off Grimgor, Boneripper and The White Dwarf (Carried by Gotrek and Bugman). Although this trio managed to kill him, 1) They were about three times his points cost and 2) He reduced The White Dwarf to a single wound and took a wound off Grimgor too.
So, back to the Dragon Ogres. I think I'll wait until some new models are released for them (Any confirmation on this?) before I use them in my army other than maybe proxied in games with my friends just to test them out.
