Is anyone tempted to geek out on magic with the new book? It seems really tough to pull off a strong magic phase like other armies can muster.
Are you just running scroll caddies? Something else for magic defense?
Just give the finger to magic overall?
A sorcerer lord with a couple of scrolls and tooled up for combat will be my "defensive" caster. The WoC spellcasters are great at being a double hatter.
Not sure if I'd bother with heavy magic, requires a lot of points but I have seen a lot of tzeentch casters going for the big nasty spell, the name escapes me so lets call it No. 6.
I have seen a couple of tourneys in the past month where No. 6 has totally ruined someones day. Apart from that little gem most people seem to be going combat heavy.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
My last game I had a tzeentch sorcerer lord on disc with Golden eye of tzeentch for protection against shooting, spell familiar for extra spell, and rod of torment as a bound spell. He was quite the caster, I had my spell caddy use lore of shadows to try and get unseen lurker. My disc sorecerer Caused alot of grief fro my Dark Elf opponent by Casting treason of tzeentch on his exectuioners and corsairs.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
Unless your army has inhate magical abilities tied in (Undead for the most part) or very cheap infantry to compensate for the heavy point sink (skaven, massive skink lizardmen armies), you opponent will end up investing alot less point than you to have an effective counter. Doing so he will sacrifice magic of is own, but having a superior lords slot when it comes to leadership and combat weight will then make him come up top.
Most of the non-undead armies I faced so far have underperformed in the magic phase, simply because I have my 325 points of magical defenses are good enough to undermine 600 points of caster value. Your wizards will be prone to assassination attempts, in an army that isn't that flexible and can't punish opponents at range. We lost all the good units that ran well in magic oriented army lists, the screamers and furies to counter this.
Ultimately it comes down to how much you like magic, it will win you some and lose you some. I don't think it's the right stuff for mortal chaos anymore.
~I like to run a Lvl 2 Sorcerer of either Nurgle or Tzeentch with The Book of Secrets and a Power Familiar, and if I have points I'll get the Conjoined Homunculus.
~It gives you three spells you know, and I'll usually take the Lore of Death from the book of secrets, hoping for a magic missile and i'll just take the 1st lvl spell if i need to. Then there's two spells cast with three power dice each.
~Mind you, that provides little magic defense, but with Lore of Nurgle, you can start to widdle down casters with the 1st spell.
