Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have been scrolling through the army lists for WoC on this site and notice that most 2k armies don't include a warshrine. Im new to fantasy but after looking at the survivbility stats of this model, its ability to boost another units stats, and its good combat capabilities I see this as a mandatory unit. Am I missing something that makes this model not worth the points or am I right on by making this a must have model for 2k lists?
Ya i thought that might be why but in my opinion its not that bad because you can make your own individual model that nobody else will have. And its a warshrine...aka a large obnoxious thing that shows off your armies colors...lots of room for fun imo.
My main question is whether or not this thing is as strong as it looks or if it has any major flaws I havn't seen due to lack of gaming experience.
I think the main problem with making one is that no one knows how big they're supposed to be.
Are they chariot-sized, or are they monster-sized?
As for myself, I think I'm going to use the Empire War Altar model as a basis.
I'll replace the Grand Theogonist with a few warrior/hero models, the Empire horses with a few Chaos ones, and the gryphon statue with a greater daemon of Slaanesh (since I'm playing Slaanesh) painted to look like a statue. I might even throw in a few of the slave girl models if I can find room on the base.
It'll be an expensive conversion, but hopefully will turn out great.
I don't think it has any flaws really, well not any less than anything else. Don't get it in combat on its own against a ranked up unit. It's pretty hard to kill but it's not exactly killy so it'll never win a combat on it's own.
It's a support unit aslong as you treat it like one you should have no trouble.
Other than that, you're right the conversion potential alone is enough to have one. Well it is for me anyway. Any ideas how you're going to do yours?
The reason I dont use it is because I use the points on horsemen and warhounds which are imperative to make my killer units survive. A warshrine couldn't possibly keep pace with the rest of my cavalry army.
"The more choices you force the opponent to make, the better the chance for you to capitalize on his mistakes"
Ya i can see cavalry armies not being fond of this model. Im at least gonna have 3 strong foot units though so he can chill with them.
and one quick clarification on the warshrine...in order for a unit to be given a roll on the Eye of the Gods list it needs to be within 12 inches of the warshrine. If you are happy with the upgrade that unit gets can they keep that upgrade even if they leave the 12 inch zone or will leaving that proximity to the warshrine cause them to lose their upgrade?
And as for my ideas on my model...
I read a forum of someone who wanted to use a disc of tzeentch. I like that idea and I want to make one of those disks into a floating Battle Standard type of thing. Big gaudy flag showing off my armies colors. And put it on a big base and have a battle scene happening on the base. Have some warriors or marauders destroying some poor little elves or something fun like that. Doesn't truely represent a big war machine type unit but more of a floating banner protected by an elite body guard. I also like the above idea of trying to put in some chick models. Might be cool to throw in a deamonette model from the old book on the base somewhere.
I believe as long as you cast initially on a unit within 12" that unit can keep that buff as long as the warshrine is alive, ie you don't have to stay within 12". Also, as far as how they play, I have tested them a bit and so has a friend, and so far I am not very impressed. The inability to actually choose the buff is pretty weak because often you get useless buffs. For example, for three turns in a row I managed to get magic resistance 3 versus a player who had a level one scroll caddy only. While they are cheap, and tough, as long as you don't engage a ranked unit, I am just not sure they bring a whole lot to the army.
Yeah it the target unit can leave the 12" and do what it wants and will keep it's upgrade until the shrine Dies or casts it's gaze on another unit.
Well, instead of a flag or something you can have it has a vortex into the realm of chaos where the 'sacrifices' are literally hurled to Tzeeentch himself. you could do something like that on a Disc, almost like a Eldar wraith gate type thing.
You could have a caged Deamon 'blessing' nearby units. Have him caged/chained on a disc.
You could have a sorcerer standing on the Disc with an alter on it, sacrifice drapped over a plinth or something chest ripped open and the sorcerer offering up 'bits' to Tzeentch
One Idea i had was for a all troll army and the warshrine was a Troll Sorcerer, the gaze representing his bizarre magic making a nearby unit better (almost like Ogre gut magic) The stat line almost representing a hard troll character.
But yeah, for my marauders I went for the plain old charriot type thing pulled by a chaos knight steed with warriors walking beside it with a big flashy banner thign o doom (like the pic)
Lots of ideas....
I am going to use a Corpse Cart for a Nurgle War Shrine, just add on some Chaos bitz and its a cheap easy conversion.
